YORK GENTLEMEN,â€"At ymn next- session you will likely be called upon to consider various questions in regard to the York Roads management. No doubt you till wish to do what is right in these matters, but there is a deep feeling among the travelling community that their interests have not rebeived the attention from you that. they require. How is it that the humllingjr of about $30,000 are left year alter year to the management of one in- dividual, without any inquiry or dis» cussion in your Honorable Council 1 Why is it that the debt upon the York Roads remains so large, notwithstanding this immense revenue ? Only something like $72,000 were paid for the York Roads ahout. sixteen years ago. Now 10x30,000â€"$480,000. Now this shows that about four hundred and eighty lions-and dollars have been receiveti to pay off seventy two. thousand dollars. 1 know what answer[ will get to the above. One is that the washing away of the bridges four years ago Cost such an immense sum. Nowavhat (lid they cost ? Only a mere bagatelle of the above rev- enue Another answer to me will he that. I have overstated the revenue. \Vell perhaps I haVe to a small extent, merely for the purpose ofyusing'rnun‘d numher-‘s. But gentle:nen,be kind enough to look at the exact. figures and you will find them but little less than the round sums I have named above, nod all have been ground out of the hard earnings of the travelling community, and perhaps t“'icF as much more. I have not counted what has hem made and spent. hy the {burteen toll- keepers. Say $500 for each to keep his family, 14x$500â€"$7,000 a year. Then say another$500 a year for profi‘s for each. It may be said that some of them have not made anything. but others have netted profits enough and got rich, to level‘::ll up to this average. Then the account stands thus: $500 for living and $500 for profits-$1,000 al "ear for each tollâ€"keeper, making $514,000 a year that the tollâ€"keeper's do not pzxv ‘2: the aSiiper~ intendent, added “$0 ".000 ayem-H that they pay-hi _ it)z\l;i‘.,l_%p* Ala-year” paid out of the hand earnings «it"the' travelling community. Multiply this by the sixteen years, or about this time (perhaps it is seventeen years since the roads came into the County’s hands) 16 times $44000 equal $704000. Seven hundruti and four thousand dollars have been muddled away to pay off $72000. and the $72 000 are not half paid ofl'yet. Gentlemen of the Cuuncil (-xf Y»rk.fww long is this fvlly tn cnntiunei'l The math- er is in yuur own hands. Will you think the above wnrthy of your consideration at your next meeting. Richmond Hill, Jan. 11th. "833 A telegram from Ml'x J. Elliott stating that he had accepted Caledonia High Schonl. Mémbers present, Rev. I. Campbell, Messrs. Buyh, Tet-9y, Dilnc'zlh, Savage. Crosby and 'l‘reuch. Mr. Teefy asked the Sebretury to read minutes of the meeting of Dec. 22. as the LIBERAL represented lnm as seconding a resolution and also soc‘mding an amendâ€" ment to the regulntiun. The Secretary on turning to the minutes found that the original mntirm Was not recnrded. Mr. Buyle stated lhnt the repbrt of the LIB- BRAD was correct. The School Board met on the 5th inst, at? p. m. The President in the ’chair. Minutes of previous meetihg read and adopted. Mr. Crosby slated that, he thought the original moti0n had been withdrawn. Mr. Bule stated that, it lmd nut. The Chairnmn explained that. while the report of the LIBERAL was substantially correct, yet it was supposed tlmt the original motion had been dropped. Rev. 1. Campbell agreed with Mr. Boiyile._ Mr. Duncan, seconded by Mr. Savage, mowed that the Board now concur in the action of the Secretgarry. A A member of the Bum-d stated that the amendment. was pruposed and neonnded and adopted as an amendment and there- fore the original mntiun was 11M. dropped. School Board Yours Regpgctfnjliy,‘ “f of 02‘ Mr. Follieriugham stated that'he spent [r0111 before 2 o‘clock to 4 o‘clock p. m. , in Mrs. Wiley’s room. He showed that though the average marks of the whole school was lower than the previous year, yet the average in Mrs. \Viley’s school was considerably higher than the previous year. He also stated that, the average attendance in all the schools was much higher than it sh‘uuld be for the teachers, but supposed they were hampered for funds. Mr. theringham said that was a mistake, and the man who made the statement, would do credit to himself by withdrzmfixig it_. 'The Cllnirmafi'eXphide hmv the state- ment had been wide and said that the Bum-d wislmd a)“ explanation} as the report of Mrs. \Viley’s school was better than the previous year and it was stated‘ he had spent a, very short, time in it. In answer to a. question from Mr. Boyle, Mr. Fotheringham stated that his coming earlier this year accounted fur the standing of the higher depart mth of the school being lower than the previous year. He also stated that the attendance had been very irregular in Mr. McMahon’s school, the average be- ing that every pupil wsa. absent one day one of three. 100 acres, east half of Lot No. 24, 3rd Con. Vaughsz ; over 80 acres cleared. For further particulars apply to JAMES MCDONALD. 28 Sin. Maple. Mr. Fotheringham being called upon stated that he was at 9. loss to know ex- nctly what the Board required of him. Statements had been made by one of the village papers which were very injurious to him personally. He had made his ex- planation through the columns of that paper, vindicating himself, which he in- tended the members of the Board to see. If they wanted him to give them any in- mrniatiun concerning the scheuls as to their efficiency he would gladly give 1t. He stated that if the Board wished he Could give the time, to the hour and minute,at uhich he entered and left each school. He gave the standing of the schools for the last four years and the names of the pupils who attended during that time. Mr. ’I‘ebfy asked in which of the schools he had «mly spent fifteen or twenty min- utes at Ms last. vmit. Mr. Campbell said that personally he believed Mr. Fotheringhznn did his dmy, but, he put more dependence in the 1e.- snlt of Lhe entrance examinations than the repnrt of any inspector. Mr. Futheringham said he thought they were eXpecting fruit befure the trcu had time to grow. He brought befme the Buurd the necessity of securing a fourth teacher again, the attendch be- ing entirely too high. Mr. 'l‘eefy moved. Mr. Duncan second- ed, that the thanks of the Board be leu~ dered to Mr. Fotlmringlmm for his at- tendance at, the Board and the important information 21v<m.â€"Ca.x-ried.
