At the meeting of the City Council on Monday it was decided, on the outing vote of Mayor Boswell, that the new Court House should be erected on Queen- street West, at the head of Bay-street. The decision is objectionable, and so is the manner in which it was reached, The location of the Court House is an import- ant matter, and as such it should not be decided by the casting vote of the chair- man. There is ample precedent for the presiding officer refusing to give the vote which is to decide such a. large question as this. In Mayor Boswell’s case it han- pens that he is justly or unjutly suspec- ted of desiring to manufacture political capital for himself in the districts which is to benefit by his vote, and. in view at this, his presuming to vote is an act of utter indecency. The objections to the site chOSen are many and important. It is almost cer- tain that the county will not adopt it, but will stand by its own choice This means that we are to have two court houses, two sets of courts, and bother and bewilderment among suitors,witness- es, and the general public as to which is the Court House. Further, a Court house on the site chosen will be less accessible to the majority of the people than it would if on one of the sites east of Yonge. There is lack of hotel and eating-house accommodation near the new site for those who have business at the court. But the chief objection is one afl'ecting the financial interests, almost the rights of a large class of people. There are a number of businesses that have grown up about the Court House, the success of which is dependent on the patronage which the presence of the Court House brings them. For instance, there are many hotels Within a. few hundred yards of the present site, the proprietors of which depend to a large extent upon the custom of these having business in the Court. These hotels have, it may be said been brought into being by the necessity that has existed for the accommodation of jurors and Witnesess whose slender al- lowances have not permitted them to go to more expensive places. What these jurors and witnesses wanted was plain, decent accommodation for $1.00 a day and that has been supplied to them. Now, by the casting vote of Mayor Bos- well, the Council decrees that the liveli- hood of these hotel-keepers shall be taken away and their property destroyed. It will be most unfair to those interested if the success of their trade is interfered with by a vote of the City Council. The whole question of the Court House should be re-considered.â€"Globc.
