Uu uuv Douuuv . “ Let a person examine the boots of a horse that has been shod steadily for a year or two and then the hoofs of one that has not been shed, and he will ï¬nd the hoof of the shod horse dry and often full of ï¬ne cracks, without any gloss on the outside and very brittle. If they lose a shoe even in summer they must be shod immediately or they cannot walk. The hoof as nature left it will be solid and ï¬rm covered with a gloss as though varnished, and the frog in proper proportion to the hoof, so that when they step it receives the pressure and expands the hoof and saves the pastern joint from any unneces- sary jar or strain. “There have been but few days since I quit shoeing but what my horses could stand anywhere a roughshod horse could, and better than a smoothshod horse could. A smooth-shod horse will slip worse on an icy road than a barefooted horse. . . . .. A horse’s feet are like a person's, if they are shod the foot be- comes tender; if they go barefonted the feet become hard and tough. Where a horse has been shod until the foot is tender. the shoe should be pulled ofl‘ as early in the spring as they can, after it quits freezing. If pulled OH in the sum- mer they cannot stand it.†I visited lately the family of a farmer friend, and found it a happy place. The father and mother, bright with health, and managing all with an ease and regu- larity only paralleled by the steady true- going of the family clock in its tall case in the hall. A grandmother impressed me as the founder of all this skill, com- petence and comfort. Her son’s manner to her indicated a gratitude and vener- ation which warmed my heart. I felt a flood of reverence myself in looking at her calm, serene, motherly face, about which evidently trials had laid siege but without marring its lines. We speak of angel-faces among the young, but it is only after all the trials of a life have re- ï¬ned the lineaments that the pure silver of a noble nature shines fully out. ,__LL UL n uuusv mun-v -..-..-_ _ One thing distressed meâ€"the thought- lessness of the young. They know noth- ing rf the long endurance of trials that has made their grandmother so quiet, so meek, so pale, and so tolerant of all their words and deeds ; and they are often bitterly cruel withonr. intending it. 1 could not leave without ï¬rst having a talk with the gay and happy childrenâ€"a talk which ï¬lled some of them with sur- prise and their eyes with tears. There is nothing more beautiful than serene old age, unless it be the sight of joyous child- ren ever showing respect and aflection to the gray hairs and easing their way to the tomb. We owe it to the aged to show them by deference and attention that although the struggle of life is over with them their feelings and opinions are still held in respect. Pruning the Grape. All, or nearly all, of the vines grown In graperies are trained on the spur sys- temâ€"that is, the lateral shoots are cut back to within two or three buds of their base each year, and from these buds the fruit; is produced, and no more wood is allowed to grow than is necessary to fur- nish bearing canes for the next season .3,,, _t _A_ um... vvâ€"--â€" ._7. and leaves for the assimilation of sap. This, or similar spur-system of training is practised extensively in the vineyards of Europe, and to a conliderable extent in this country, among vineyardists who train their vines, and do not allow them to run wild. If a cane is allowed to grow ten to twenty feet in length without a check, the lowermost buds would no doubt fail to produce good large clusters of fruit if such canes were shortened to within two or three buds of their base, but to allow vines to grow at random in that way is to cause a wasteful exhaustion of the iertillty of the soil, unless the ob- ject is to produce wood for propagation. When vines are permitted to grow wild, without summer pinching or checking their growth, then they must be pruned long in order to obtain a good crop of fruit, but short stopping of summer growth develops the lower buds on the canes, and short pruning may follow with a certainty of obtaining as much fruit as the vine is capable of carrying through to the ripening period. This is none the less startling when it is remembered that not ï¬ve per cent. of the patients presenting themselves to the regular practitioner are benefltted, while the patent medicines and other advertised cnree never record a core at all. Starting with the claim now generally be- lieved by the most scientific men that the disease is due to the presence oi living parasites in the tissues.
