The unaccomplishod Work of the Mail’s hand have, like their counterpart. in. nature, abortive, monstrous, or un- The Telegram is out strongly in favor of Howland, and working tooth and nail in his interest. One feature in his treat- ment of this subject is worth of note, It announces itself as strongly opposed to the introduction of class and sectarian prejudice 'into the Maynralty contest. We may all say Amen to this and pray that confusion may at all times and at all places await the men who drag such base- ness into the light of day. Returning to the Telegram, a paper which, up to last Tuesday, did as much as any one could do to fan into flame the sectarian cry of the tag rag and bobtail of 'l‘oryism. The shameful and lmrefaced inconsistency of this however and neVeI-theless organ is what it is pleased to call in its own pleas- ant way a proof of its real independence; so might a weather-cock on a church steeple boast, driven hither and thither by winds from every quarter of the globe. The weathercock I am reminded is even more consistent than the Telegram czm possibly be since the action of the winds proceed from some fixed and inmlterable principle. which is not within the power uf the weathercock t0 contrul. If the sectarian cry is allowable on Tuesday, what. enlistitutes its depravity 0n \Ved- nesday '1 1f the Telegrsz used it, why can’t. the \Vorld 2 It’s wonderful the amount of bunibnnzlmg the ordinary public can stand. Carlyle was not far out in his strong, biting way of estimating the national characler. Oh Jeruiny what what feels we be .' Numbers of voters who under any nth- er Condition of things would cheerfully cast their weight against Hon-land. will I think take the opinion of the Globe as their guidance in this issue, or at least content themselves with a. neutral stand- point and refrain from voting. In men- tioning the Globe we cannot refrain from paying a tribute to the generally sound stand it Is accustomed to take on questions of a municipal nature. On general poli- tics it is easy to differ and still be true to one’s principles. But to matters coming right under the eyes of every dweller in the city and within his power of thorough- ly understanding such as city govern- ment is, the Globe is far ahead as the one newspaper in this city which treats these things in a. way as admirable as it is fair minded and honest. Mr. David Blain is waging relentless war on Mr. Howland, holding no less than three ward meetings on a single evening, and delivering a fresh speech at each meeting. His speeches are of the nature of a prolonged act of self glorifi- cation, with an occasional aside aimed at Mayor Howland. It is unfortunate for Mr. Blain that while himself an unob- jectionable character, the liquor interest see in himâ€"as they thinkâ€"one who is more likely to deal gently with the fail- ings of their class than Mayor Howland is prepared to do. Mr. Blain is President of the Central Bank. He will be gener- ally supported by the commercial and, manufacturing interests. Several efforts have been made to arouse sectar- ian and national feelings to the injury of Mr. flowland, by a newspaper which at present supports Mr. Blain, but which as every one believes would support Mr. ,Howland had his offer been as tempting as that of Mr. Blain‘s. The News gal- lantly stands by Mr. Howlandw though its efficiency in the present contest as compared with the help it afforded him in his combat with Mr. Manning, has fallen away to a great, degree. Its edi- torial columns are woefully weak and are not a tactor worth counting, if effective- ness be the test. The Globe has, L imag- ine, fairly measured Mr. Howland, tell- ing him in forcible and sober language the weak points in his last year’s admin- istration, yet concluding with an express ion of confidence that he will remedy those weak paints and use his last year’s experience to the great advantage of the city if entrusted with a renewal of the citizens’ favor. It is many years since such a hard struggle for victory has centered around the Mayor’s chair. The elements of bit- terness and abuse have very largely en- tered into this Contest. By an unfortun- aLe slip of the tongue made by Mr. Howâ€" Land towards the close of his speech on nomination day, he furnished his oppo neu‘us with a stock of‘ readyqnade argu- ments capable of doing infinite mischief Lo hés muse. Mr. Chas \Vhitchelo and wife, of Port Perry, are spending the holidays with their Sun, Mr. l'muk \Vhitchelo, of this nlace. Rev. A. McLaughlin has been on the sick list for the past few days. He was unable to fill his oppointment on last Sunday. but is convle esing slowly. _ On Thursday, Dec 30th, 1886, the Downsview fu()t ball team came to this place and defeated the Sherwood “Stars” by two goals to one. 'lhe game was a. friendly one throughout. Mr. James Jackson, of the ’Vursity eleven, acted as referee to the satisfaction of both parties. After the match the players were treated to supper by the young ladies of this vicinity at the house of Mr. Chas White. Supper over, Mrs. White kindly opened her parlor, where a pleasant time was spent. Mr. Fred McGuire, of Weston, sang several solos. Several recitations were rendered by Messrs. \V. J. Mc- Donald, of the Downsviews, and P. R. McLaughlin, of the Stars. The company broke up at an early hour, every one voting Miss White a splendid hostess. In the evening, all the pleasure seekers for miles around were seen making their way towards the Lutheran church, where' an interesting programme wasrendered by the Sunday School and excellent out side talent. Mr. J. E, Kctchum and wife, assisted by Miss Bellis, all of Toronto, deserve special notice. Several fine ducts by the ladies were sung. Mr. Ketchum and wife sang “Six months before mar- riage,” in Dutch Dialect, which was loudly encored; after which they sang ‘Sixmonths after marriage,” filling the house with laughter.
