Good stablâ€" RXCEMOND HILL, Feb. 16th. 1887‘ To the Voters in the Coming Election. From our own Correspondent. The friends and pupils of the Methoâ€" dist Sabbath Schonl enjoyed their annual sleigh ride last \Vednesday afternoon. Five sleighs were packed with the schol- ars and their friends. who, after drlving as far as Richmond Hill, returned, when they were created to an excellent tea in the Vestry of the church. All agree in saying this was one of the most success- ful of their annual driies. Our village, which is usually very quiet was thrown into quite an uproar last Monday Dig-ht by the how-lings of a drunk- en man, a shoemaker who came to our village a short time since. He made the air hideous with his oaths, and was only quieted after being threatened with arrest -â€"the sight of the “jlmn'i‘i‘esW proving too much for ‘him. The revival services m the Methodist church are being continued. Last Monday evening the Rev. Mr. Day, Provincial Sec’y of the S. S. Asso- ciation, gave an excellent address in the Methodist church, to the Sabbath School workers of this village and Vicinity. A good audience was 111 attendance, and thoroughly appreciated the practical hints thrown out. At the auction sale last Monday, Mr. H. Rumble purchased the farm owned by the late Adam Storm for the sum of $4,040. We understand Mr. Rumble has since sold the timber on it to Mr. H. Marsh for a handsome sum, leaving the farm alt a very nominal ï¬gure. At the lash meeting of the Methodist Quarterly Board the Rev. J. Pearen was unanimuusly requested to remain on the circuit anuther year. Mr. Pearen has given entire satlsfact/ion and we are glad the friends have invited him to stay. ’l‘hcil‘views in p611]? mm; mémamm wnu "booï¬e'j give W110 cure n_0t 1}va men die or llve Promoting whth ifsigoud. What most. affects our uzq‘pmess, Unnil that cause is wan. Let minor subjects hch :1. rest; Much is but nwuflgl‘iq ut‘xhv best, Maple - Dr. Gilmour, M. P. P. for West York, was then called upon. He complimented the meeting on the large number of ladies present, but said he was not surprised to ï¬nd them taking such a. keen interest in the present contest, especially on the temperance q nestiOn. He then read a copy of a petition sent to Mr. Wallace during the session of 1885, when the :vmnndments to mutilate the Scott Act by allowing beer and wine to be Sold, n ere introduced. This petition was sent by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union of this village, askiug Mr. Wallace, as 3. man of honor, to use his influence in protecting their homes from the liquor trafï¬c. The speaker was sorry to say that Mr. \Vallace not only did not ack- nowledge the receipt of this petition, but voted in direct opposition to their earnest pleadings. He urged the electors to Vote tor Dr. Lynd, who had pledged himself to do all in his power to further the cause of temperance. Mr. G. B. Smith needed no introduct- ion to the audience, as he is becoming personally well known and highly re- spected, as member for East York. He was here more particularly to speak for his hunnred friend, Mr. Mackenzie, whum ne was proud to represent as an honest statesman, eminently ï¬t to represent East York or any other constituency. He spoke of the necessity of earnest work, and felt satisï¬ed that the name of Alfred Boultbee would never be heard of as a politician after the 22nd of February. Mr. S. H. Blake, the speaker of the evening, was then introduced, and was enthusiastically received. He commemoi by saying he had not one hard word to utter against the great body of Conserva- tives, many of whom he knew to be true and honest men. \Vhat he had to say was principally against the fourteen men who sat on the treasury benches. He than proceeded to show up the govern- ment and some of its serVile supporters, in a manner that was cutting and severe, yet with that digniï¬ed manner that could not fail to marry conviction to the im- mense audience who cheered him again and again. He eiilOgizca Hon. Alex. Mackenzie, as all holiest men of both parties do, and said it was a disgrace to have him pitted against such a disreput- able puppet as Mr. Boultbee. Sir John Macdonald had spoken in the highest terms of Mr. Mackenzie. but was billed to speak in St. Paul’s Ward this evening in the interest of Boultbee, who was better qualiï¬ed to do his dirty work. He dwelt at considerable length on the liquor question, and asked tenipeiance men to vote for Mr. MacKenzie and Dr. Lynd who were pledged to the work, instead of supporting Messrs. Boultbee and \Vallnce, whose past record in this respect, both in and out of Parliament, had been bad in the extreme. He dealt with the Fran- chise act, the Gerryniaiider Bill, the C.P. R., Riel and the North West rebellion &c. d-c. in a masterly manner, but time will not permit even a synopsis of the same. He felt sanguine of a Liberal vic- tory, as it was a. battle between truth and falsehood, between honestv and selï¬sh- ness, between good and evil. The meet- ing closed with cheers for the Queen, Mr. Blake and the Reform Candidates. The same gentlemen, with the except- ion ut Mr. Smith, addressed an immense audience in the Town Hall, Vellore, in tha afternoon, and made a lasting im- m-usmon. ' Seldom, if ever, has Richmond Hill witnessed such sgrand ovation as was tendered the Reform speakers at the Ma- sonic Hall last evening. Long before the time appointed for opening: the hall, trains of people were on their way, so anxious were they to obtain admittance, and in a very short time after the doors were thrown open, the place was packed with as orderly and intelligent an audi- ence as ever gathered in this village. We fear that many were unable to get inside the doors. The speakers were Hon. S. H. Blake, Dr. Lynd, Dr. Gilmonr and G. B. Smith. On entering the hell they were given a. rousing reception, the cheer- ing and clapping lasting for several min. ntes. On motion of Mr. D. James. sec- onded by Dr. Lnngstaff, Mr. P. Patter- son, ex-M. P. R, was chosen chairman. After a few very appropriate remarks, he called on Dr. Lynd to address the meet- The Dr. criticized the past record of the present government, and showed that they had not been true to the trust re- posed in them. He showed how the act relating to the independence of Parlia- ment was evaded, and stated that no less than 550 orders in council of timber lim- its had been granted to- members of Pan‘- liament and their friends. He denied mnphaticully the statement made by Mr. Clarke \Vallnce here last week that the President of the West York Reform Ase sociation had paid out money illegally, and challenged the author of the story to prove the statement. 111g.
