Having occasion to buy a horse when in Shiraz some few days ago I sent for Zerin- gee, the dealer, who intormed me that he had a. Turcoman that answered the descrip- tion I gave him and which he swore by the heard of the prophet he had bought; for £50. The animal was brought around, and, prov- ing satisfactory, I offered him £10 at which he mounted and rode off in high dudgeon. I turned in knowing that I should see the horse buck in the morning, and sure enough at an early hour my iervunt informed me the horse dealer wished to see me. I went out to him and with many protestations of respect and regard he conï¬dentially inur- mured that the horse having evidently been pro-destined for me he would not stand be- ‘ Lweon me and Providence, but would sacri- ï¬ce £5 for my sake, thut I might have the horse for £45. This I told him was ridiculous, but as I thought on consideration my first offer, was perhaps a. little too low for such a, good horse now ofered him £15 which he refused de claring that his dead father would return from his grave if he sold the horse at such it less. For two days I saw no more 01 Zerin- gee,.on the third day he came again and say ing he was greatly pressed for cash or no- thing would persuade him to do such a thing he would sell the horse at the very lowest possible price he could ever be in- duced to take, viz, £253, but that 1 must throw in a present of ten shillings. At this I pretended to be very angry and ï¬red him out, declaring that I would not buy the horse at any price. But privately telling my servant to buy him for £20, this had the desired effect, and the next morning the horse was mine for £20 and a present of ï¬ve shillings. ‘ -n A curious custom in vogue here is the sys- tem of Dah th, otherwise one in ten, or ten per cent. It was in a somewhat similar state of mind I found myself this morning. I had ridden some ten miles out to a village and feeling fatigued gave my horse to a native whilst I entered a garden for half an hour‘s rest. On remounting I ‘noticed the animalâ€"which had been shod the previous dayâ€"was going a little lame, but thought this was caused by the stony character of the road.
