Proprielor. m, 0H WK The following is an account of the Kinnear Murder, continued from last. week’s LIBERAL: “ McDermott stated that. ‘in the morn- ing after the night that my heart failed me in canying out my intentions to mur- der the housekeeper, l was coming into ihe kitchen to light the ï¬re, and met Grace Marks with the pail in her hand, goinu to milk the cows. As she passed me she gave me a poke With the pail in the ribs, and whispered with a. sneer: ‘Aien’t you a coward l ’ As she uttered these minds. the devil, against whom I had fought all night, entered into my lie-art, and transformed me into a demon. All feelings ol remorse and mercy forsook me lrnm that instant, and darker and deeper plans of niuruer and theft flashed through my mind. ‘Go and feed the cnws,’ said I with a bitter laugh. ‘ you >lia|l soon see if I am the coward vou take me for.’ She invent out to milk, and l “ent in to murder the unsuspicious housekeeper I found her at. the sink in the kitchen. washing her face in a. basin. I had the fatal axe in tny liand, und withâ€" out pausing ‘or an instant to change my mind. I struck her a. heavy blow on the top at the head with the axe. She fell to the floor at, my feet. without uttering a w-rd; and opening the trap dtmr that led from the kitchen into the cellar, I hurled her down, closed the door, and wiped away the perspiration that. was streaming down my face. " A few m‘nutes later Grace Marks came III with her pails. looking on innu- cent and demure as the milk they con- tained. McDeruiott told her what he i had done| and demanded that she ac- Cull‘pfllly him down into the cellar to dis- pose of the body of the murdered woman. She obeyed, and they went into the cellar, which presented a. dreadful spec- ‘ tacle. Nancy Montgomery was not dead: she nad only been stunned by the blow. She had partly recovered her senses, and was kneeling on one knee as the hideous pair descended the ladder with a ligh‘. ‘1 don’t know if she saw us,’ said Me- Dermott, 101' she must have been blinded with the blood that was flowinu from her face; but she Certainly heard us. and raised her clasped hands, as if to implore mercy. 1 turned to Grace. The expres- sion of her liVId face was even more dreadful than that of the unfortunate Woman. She uttered no cry, but she pm her hand to her head and eaid: ‘God has damned me lor tnis ’ Then you have nothing now to fear said I; give me that handkerchief off your neck. She gave it without a Word. I threw myself upon the body of the housekeeper, and, plant- ing my knee on her heart, I tied the handkerchief around her throat in a. single tie, giving Grace one end to hold, while I drew the other tight enough to ï¬nish my terrible work.’ "Mr. Kinnear returned next day, not I on horeeback, as he had departed, but driving a light one horse wagon. He was informed that the housekeepere had gone to Toronto by the stage. to which he replied: ‘That is strange, as I passed the stage and did not see her in it.’ After ten Kinneur was inveigled by Mc- Dermott into the harnesmhouse or back _kitchen,and there shot through the heart. He staggered forward and fell, exclaim- ing as he did so: ‘0 God. I am shot.’ The body was then thrown into the cellar. McDermott and Grace Marks then commenced packing up all the valu- ‘ ‘ ables they could ï¬nd. They both went into the cellar, and McDermott took the keys and some money from the murdered men’s pockets. About 11 o'clock p. in. the murderers harnesSed the horse; put the boxes in the wagon and started for 'l‘..romo, where they breakfasted about 5 o'clock. They then Went by boat to Lewiston, where they were to be married, but were arrested the next morning a- bout 5 o'clock by the bailifl' and brought back to Toronto. At the trial which fol- lowed both were found guilty of murder and Were sentenced to be hanged, the lemele with a recommendation to mercy . McDermott suffered the penalty of the law on the 21st of November. and his body wee handed over to the Medical SChoul, The younger criminal was forwarded to the Provmcisl Penitentiary at Kingston, her sentence having been cwnmuted to imprisonment for life. For a short time since her Imprisonment she occupied a cell in the lLssne Asylum. Toronto, it Inning been thought she was a maniac. She was soon sent back to the Penitenâ€" tiary as it Was said by the keeper of the Asylum ner insanity was feigned. After several petitions to the Government she was liberated, and it is said she after- wards changed her name and married. Though the surroundings have lunch changed during the last 40 years, the house still stands, and shows the trap- door where the unfortunate Victims Were thrown afzer the murder.
