Mr. VAnHorne is reported to have stated that the C madian Paciï¬c Railway Company has decided to extend the south-western branch 75 miles this season. It is repurred that the cod ï¬shery on the north-west coxst of Newfoundland is a total failure this year, and that many families are already in a state of more than semi- starvation. Mr. Murcier has entered an actirn against Mr. C. A. Dlnsereau In connection with .- n n,,L.. Mr. \J. n. “Jill-Ju- ..â€"__ ,,, the latter's purchase of books for the Quebec Parliament library to replace those burned in the great ï¬re. It is reported that the ï¬rst officer oi the Dominion cruiser Vigilant, who was drug- ged and maltreated at Souris, P.E.I., by American ï¬shermen, will probably be dis. kissed the service. Since the beginning of the present year the Montreal License commissioners have granted no fewer than 1,106 licences for the sale of liquor in that city, only 102 up- plicants having been refused. A Harvesting in Manitoba. is ï¬nished, and an average wheat yield of between twenty~ ï¬ve and thirty bushels to the acre is assured with other cereals in proportion. It is esti- mated that at least seven million bushels of wheat, and probably more, will be available for export. In an interview in Montreal Dr. Jemes Edmonds, public analyst, and one of the medical health ofï¬cers at London, England, stated that the high death rate and the ex- cessive infantile mortality in Montreal were sure evidence of an unheflthy con- dition. In his opinion the death rate of the city ought not to exceed ‘23 per thousand. Since the announcement of the wonderful results obtained from Russian wheat in Manitoba, demands for samples have been pouring in to the Depzrtment of Agriculture. As about only two hundred bushels of seed csn be supplied by the Central experimental farm, much less than the demand, Professor Saunders has been instructed by the Minis- ter of Agriculture to import one hundred more fran Riga. - AMERICAN. The schooner Clara, b0 ad from Manistee, Mich., to Chicago, was Med 03 Miller, Ind., the other day, during a‘violent storm, and her captain and a. sailor drowned. It is ruuioured that a. powerful syndicate of American capitalists are negotiating with the Russian Government with the object of securing control of the goid minesin the Ural Mountains. FOREIGN. The cattle plague is ravaging the pro- vinces of Southern Berlin. A political and commercial treaty has been arranged between France and China. The Sociâ€"eby of British Artists has obtain- ed permission to preï¬x the Word “ Royal †to its title. The Germm Government have expelled two Russian families who resided in the en- virons of Berlin. Deputy Lazar has summoned M. Paul de Cassagnac on a charge of defaming his cha- racter in connection with the Boulanger coup d’etat story. The late Premier Depretis left all his pro- perty to his son, with an interest to his widow during her widowhood. The American Peace Memorial has been signed by 200 members of the Imperial House of Commons. Prince Ferdinand says he has always been ready to respect the Treaty of Berlin, and does not desire to encroach upon the Sultan’s sovereign rights. In spite of the modiï¬ed tone of the Frenï¬h press, the friction-between the'Governmen s of England and France over the New Hebrides question increases. The Russian: Prince Pierre Wittingenstein has died at Konleon, near Brest, of grief for the loss of his wife, the daughter of u. Breton ï¬sherman Whom he had educated. It is stated that Germany has agreed to support Russia. ‘in Bulgarian atfairs, on con- dition .of Russian neutrality in the event of a. war between Germany and France. THE WEEK'S NEWS. The whole question of whether Manitoba. will be allowed to construct a railway to the boundary will probably be fought out in the Courts. One Browning, presumably acting'Iin the interests of the GP. R., has se- cured land right in the path of the proposed railway, refuses to give the Red River Valley people right of way, and has applied to the Courts for an injunction re- straining the contractor or his men from trespassing on the land. One newspaper publishes an absurd story, giviuga Con- servative who “does not want his name published" as an authority, that Sir John Macdonald had divulged to the aforesaid nameless Conservative that it was the in- tention to station a thousand British regu- lars in \Vinnipeg to awe the unruly Mani- tobans. Of course stories such as this are intended for the people who believe the moon is made of green cheese. It may be safely predicted that the great railway company will not abandon its monopoly without a struggle, while on the other hand the settlers are ï¬ghting for existence. The war will, therefore, be a hot one, but it will hardly come to an internecine struggle. The excursion party of Ontario farmers made an early start from Langenbury on Aug. 23, and visited the Binscarth farm. The superior cattle were particularly admired. The Steamship City of Montreal of the lumen Line from New York for Liverpool was burned at sea on the night of Thurs- day last in latitude 43. About 9,,o’clock on the evening of that day ï¬re was discovered in the after hatch among the cotton. The ï¬re hoses were at once connected and streams of water were poured down upon the flames; annihilators and hand-grenade ï¬re extinguishers were also freely used. The ï¬re, however, overcame all efforts to sup- press it and spread over the upper and lower decks. The Shipwas doomed from the begin- ning of the ï¬re, and the boats had been ac- tively prepared and provisioned. At six o‘clock on the morning of the 11 inst»the flames burst through the after hatches. The boats were then lowered. There was a. high sea at the time and this caused much difï¬- culty. The women and children were ï¬rst . put aboard the- boats, and the mlla puss- engers and the crew were embarked afterwards. The lack of time prevent- ed the manning of the boats With their respective crews, the men being com- pelled to continue until the last moment the work of keeping the flames down. All the boats left the ship safely, but by an un'ortnnate oversight twenty people were lett aboard the burning vessel. BOB-t7 No. 3 returned and took off six of the number: boat No. 5, with the 4th ofï¬cer, took off six more. A barque was then re: ported approaching, and when all the boa-LB had put their people aboard her they re- turned and took 03 those remaining on the burning vessel. It was‘ found that boat No. 8 was missing. She was seen to put herself before the wind when she left the ship, using her ears in support of the sails. . She ran away from the vessel in direct dis- : obedience to the captain‘s orders. Every body spent the night aboard the German barque Trodant, from Charleston, July 24. for London, and all were then transferred to the York City, which slayed by through- out the night and vainly searched for the missing boat. Capt. Land savs he is san- guine that the people in beat No. 8 are sav- ed, as the accident occurred in the track of steamers bound east and west. The passeng- ers, he adds, were cool and obedient during the crisis, and the crew was steady. The passengers and crew lost everything they had aboard the City of Montreal except what they stood in when they went into the boats. The origin of the ï¬re is unknown. Capt. Land is certain it broke out in more than one place among the cotton. The ship was lost in lat. 43, 38 north, long. 43, _...._. m 541M -â€"..â€"m H", 54 ï¬esta. Mr. Dixon’s Return Home. Mr. A. H. Dixon, senior member of the ï¬rm of A. H. Dixon, & Son, the celebrated specialists for the cure of catarrh, hay fever and catarrhal deafness, 3l3 King street “1, Toronto, has just returned home from an ex- tended trip through California, where he has been introducing his remedies. The press of that country teem with glowing notices of I the wonderful results of this new treatment, , vouchin'g for the fact that as a cure for the j above diseases it is next to miraculous. Cases of catarrh and catarrhal deafness of thirty year‘s standing were cured by one ap- plication of this remedy and the fact vouch- ed for by men Whose names are known all over the American Continent, and whose word is indisputable (names on application) showing that Mr. Dixon’s remedies, which are applied only once in two weeks, stand alone in the cure of catarrh and its atten- dant evils. The doctors in Calfornia fail in curing these diseases for the simple reason that they insist on following the antiquated method of making applications of an irritant remedy weekly, semi-weekly, and even daily, thereby keeping the n e nbra me in a constant state of irritation, thus forming a nidus very inviting to smallpox, typhod fever, cholera and other epidemics, and as a natural re- sult of these daily and semi-weekly applica- tions not one permanent cure has ever been recorded, and the patient is left in a worse condition than before. Since the discovery of this remedy by Mr. Dixon, now seven years ago, the best physicians of Great BritainandFrancehave endorsed his method, and unite in saying that it is utterly impos- sible to cure catarrh, hay fever, or catarrhal deafness by application made oftener than once in two weeks, from the fact that the membrane must get a. chance to heal before another application is'made. However that may be, Mr. Dixon’s remedy has proved successful where all other remedies have failed. Mr. Dixon sends a pamphlet describ- ing his new treatment to any one enclosing stamp to pay postage. The address is 313 King street west, Torontoâ€"Ex.
