V.e_‘..-.. -. “n, nuuuur. They have even more wonderful mes Inentos than these. In more than one Cathedral they have specimens of the manna of the wilderness, and a few blos- soms of Aaronfsrod. In Rome they have the very ark tlmt Muses made. and the red by which. he wrought his miracles. At Gestoubury they, have the identiCal scenes which the devil tempted. our Lord to turn into bread. In another of their chapels they have the dice employed by the soldiers in casting lots for the Sav~ ionr's garments. They have also b't. Jnseph’s axe and saw; St. Anthcny’s mill stone, on which he crossed the see (fit? must have made 18. miles an hour}; St. Patrick’sstafl‘. by which he drove out the toads and snakes from Ireland; St Ann's comb; St. Mark’s boots; a piece of t the Virgin‘s green petticuut; St. An- ‘ thony’s toe-nails; and "the purings of St. Edmund’s toes.” But this does not be win to exhaust the very interesting col- lection They have a vial of St. Joseph's breath, caught as he wee exercising him- et-lf with the very axe and sew now in their possession. They have also hear from the heads of most of their saints. and twelve combs. one from each of the Apostles, with which to drees it. And M hat is more wonderful still. the combs are declared to be “all nearly as good as aw.” They have also a small bit of the l be With which Judas hanged himself; ' nose of an angel; a rib “of the Word . 1e tiesh;” “a quantity of the identical. mys of the star which led the wise men to our infant Seviourf’ Christ’s seamless coat; a wing of the archangel Gabriel, ;»btaiued by the prayers of Pope Gregory VIL; the heard of Noah; a piece of the _very same perphyry pillar on which the cock perched when he croWed after Peter's deninl, and even the comb of the cock. And then they have what we should con- mder the most valuable gem of the entire :ollection, viz.;~â€"“One of the step- of the ladder on which JacUb, in his dreamI new v'he heavenly host ascending) and deacend~ mug. “my my Luuuu pieces 0: the true cross on which our Lord was crucified. If these were all collected, no doubt they would form enough of lumber to construct one of the largest dwellings in Canada. And of nails, out cf the true cross, I have no doubt some of them might be found even In Richmond Hill. in Rome they line also the cross of the guod thief; also the entire table on which our Lord celebrated the Paschal Supper. In a. recent publi- catiunlcallcd “The Livlng Eucharist Mun- ifested by Miracles,” (written by a. good Catholic) the author assures us, “that this is the table of the Lord, and on which the world’s Redeemer and God, Jesus, offered. the first eucharistic sacri- fice." On the same authority we learn ‘ that in the Unthedml. of Valencia, in Spain, they have “the cup in which His bleed was first laid, the chalice elevated from the table by His divine hands.” “At St. Mark’s, in Venice,” says the same author. “the knife used by our Lord in touching, not cutting, the bread, is exposed each. year, on Holy Thursday, for the Veneratiun of the faithful." Bones, hom‘aver, are not the only prec- ious mementosâ€"in almoat any chapel in Europe, and also in many in Canada, may be found pieces of the true cross on which our Lord was crucified. If these were all collected, :10 doubt they would ,__,_ ,,. n. . Peter and St. Paul, and in the convent of the St. Augustines, at Bilbua, theholy monks have a large part of St. Peter‘s head, and the Franciscans a large part of St. Paul’s. At Burgos they have the tail nf Balasm’s ass (possibly they may lmve the head of some animal at Thorn hill), 3 part of the body of St. Mark, and an arm and finger of St. Ann. At Aixâ€" la Chapelle they have two teeth of St. Thomas; part of an arm of St. Simeon; a tooth of St. Catharine; a rib of St. Stephen; n shoulder blade and leg bone of St. Mary Magdalene; nil tram the bones of St. Elizabeth; bones of Sts. Andrew, James, Matthias, Luke, Mark, Timothens and John the Baptist. Per- haps it is {or the purpose of carrying all these sacred relics that Rome has five legs of the ass upon which our Saviour rode, lnto Jelusalem. ‘ been guilty, we do not. intend to say much in these letters; not that there is not much to say, but because it is, to a certain extent. foreign to our object which is to deal principally with Roman- isni in its relation to Civil Society or Governments. I might occupy many Cul- umns of your paper in describing the multitude of "Lying Wonders,” to which the Roman Church has had to resort, in order to impose upon the creduhty of her too confining people. Take the subject. of Relics, for instance. A large octavo volume might be filled. and then the list would probably be defective. In the Cathedral of St. Peter, at. Rome, they have an arm of St. LaZarus; a finger and an arm of St. Ann, the Holy Virgin‘s Mother; also the head of St. Dennis, which he caught up and carried the dis- tunes of two miles after it had been cut off. This was quite a remarkable feat, was it not? In France they have only four heads of John the Baptist. In Spain, France and Flanders, they have eight arms of St Matthew, and three of St. Luke. In the Latex-an church. in Rome, they have the entire heads of St. SlR,--With regard to the various frauds of which the Church of Rome has To the Editor of THE LIBERAL: RIonMOND HILL. Let. Rev. Mr. Per- cival and the public read the Confession of Faith, and see how much of that re~ ligious tolerance they will find there, for which they are clamouring. Let us at length havu some Roman Dogmatics, or a paraphrase on the Confession of Faith. I do not charge Presbyterians in gen~ ‘ era! with bigotry. There are plenty amongst them whose good human nature has elevated them ab0ve the narrow mindedness of Chlvanism. I have good friends amongst Presbyterians, as liberal and good neighbors as can be, but it is in spifis not because of their Presbyterianism that they are liberal. Even amongst their ministers, I am quite willing to ad- mit, there are gentlemen of finished edu» cation, of delicate truth, and of elegant courtesy in their social character on most other points, but in reference to Cathol c- ity they are nob ashamed to utter state- mentstsoo graze to be toldk These are the gentlemen at the bottom of, the No Phpery cry of the present day, trying to cram national and religious discord; as their predecessors have dune in times that are past. nun-v u. ) I have purchased recently ,and have been reading, the Confession of Faith, which is, I understand, the standard of Presby- terian doctrine. From thnl, and the history of the past, as well as the mani- festations of the present time, I can lay .before the public the anatomy of Presby- terianism, and show that, notwithstand- ing its long and sanctinionious visage to which its advocates point with such con- fidence. there is the deadly seed of in- ‘ tolerance and persecution in every joint and muscle of its Whole frame and struct- ure. The Presbyterian clergy to day are clamouring for Civil and Religious Liber ty when their object is to raise unjust hatred, and prejudice against Catholics, and deprive them of every liberty, as Presbyteriens are bound in Conscience to do according to their own teaching as found in the Confession of Faith, which says (See National Covenant, page 260, &c.):â€"“Thst papistry and superstition may he utterly suppressed. And to that end they ordain that all papists and all Priests be punished with manifold civil and ecclesiastical pains as adversaries to God’s true religion, preached and by law established, within this realm,” &c., 820. Though other religious denominations have persecuted in the name of religion, I , .. . .. . _ “*‘L , Suppose. now, for the sake of rarity’ that I enter the sanctuary of the Presby- terian religion, attack if. as he has the Catholic religion, and take it. doWn from its pedestal, on which‘people of muderate information have be‘en accustomed to venerace it. as the “bean ideal" 01 all that. is friendly to Oxvil and Rehgiuus Liberty, and lay it open by dissection. Mr. Percival has been making serious charges against them, and against the Church in whose service they are honor- ed and zealous ministers. Whether he has sustained these charges or not, I leave the public to judge. If the rev, gentleman will now tske up the Bible as a Rule of Faith, I shall be happy to dis- cuss the matter amicably with him. If he will not choose this latter wurse, I am not disposed tn remain any longer on the defensive, as l have been for the past few weeks. To the Editor of THE LIBERAL SxR,~â€"I think the pubuc must he get- ting tired of the Jesuit, Question. Rev. 1'.
