The Herald last week complained that Dr, Orr was not granted a fair hearing at. Dr. Gilmour’s meeting at Maple on V‘v’ednesday evening, tho 14th 111112., and, of course, blames the Grits for It. This is incorrect as the only interruptions during the evening were from a hot~headed Conservative who llllll “ loaded up the other way” before the meeting opened. Vell ore C clcbratic-n. It will be remembered that after Father Egan, of 'l‘lim'nhill, was robbed some time ago, two men were convicted and imprison- ed. The third burglar is still at large. Last week Father Egan got word from Toronto that the detectives had his man. He im- mediately went down to identify, but al- though he says there was a very strong re- semblance, it was not one of the party who entered his house. It is sometimes danger- ous to look like somebodv else. Methodist Churchâ€"â€" The Anniversary of the Methodist Church, 1, will be held on 1111121111 and 25th of May. The Masonic Hall, Maple, was crowded with Vaughan electors last evening. The meeting was called by Mr D W Clendeuan who first addressed the electors. Dr Gflmour followed and gave his “ Equal Rights " can- didate the usual ” scorching." Dr Orr closed the meeting and was listened to attentively. The speakers were not sparing of each others feelings in their public capacity, but from first to last nothing of a personal nature was introduced. There ware several interrup- ,1 tions from excited listeners, but the audience and the speakers seemed to look upon it as so much “ spice ” thrown i to help in an in- teresting discussion As the ground covered was pretty much the sum. as at Thoruhill the previous evening, winch is reported on another page, we will not repeat it here. From the feeling of last night’s meeting the‘ electors of Maple and vicinity are endently well satisfied with their present members, Mr Jae McNeil or cupied the choir. First Practice. The Fire Brigade held their first practice of t' is season on Monday evening. In the absence of the C.tptu'n.1,Lieut Savage took charge of the men. There was an excellent turn-out; nearly every member of the Com- pany seemed to be at his post. When orders were given a start was made from the fire- hall; the engine, hose reel and hook- and- ladder apparatus were taken to the Link, corner of Yonge and Richmond Sts, and work began. Foreman Redditt’s department unl'celed the hose, and the hook-aud-ladder men, under command of Foreman Sheppard, ascended the roof of the. Fire Proof Store. As the old hose was used that evening. it burst in three different places at different times, so great was the pressure. Three times did the men supply 50 ft lengths of hose, and water was again thrown on the building in the very good time of 4% minutes after leaving the lire-hall. After some sharp. practice the engine and hose were takeu to the tank in front of the High school. and the neighboring places were sprinkled. From the work done it would seem the company were never in better shape.
