It would appear from town talk that Mr, Dilwm-th. the Toronto Drnggish is the only mun that can furnish a suitable and rapid cure for the La Grippe or In- fimmzw D m’x fail to ca?! and see him when - ' ‘* the citv and he convince] Mr. Er J Davis’ majority of 700 over Mr. C. C. Robinson, in North YOIk, does not surprise any person. In iact the Junction Comet in an editorial points to the result as al- most a victory for the latter, and expresses excessive joy that the ma- jority was not larger. It states that at the last general election Mr- Rohinson was defeated by 900, and ceiigratnlates him on the splendid showing he made last Thursday. Friend Stevenson appears to be easily satisfied. The York Herald last week pre- dicted the result of the elections, and proved itself quite a prophet. It said: "The battle is won before it commences” &c. “’6”, the battle was won on Thursday, but, we pre- sume, the result is not what The Herald expected. And hesmies all this the leader of the ()ppositlon went to the electors w1tho11t a snbstantiztl platform. The principal cry was for the abolition of Separate Schools, and those who were willing to admit that all schools should be non- sectarian, knew per- lectly wel 11 that to attack the Mewut Administration on such a point was dishonest and foolish. It will be interesting to watch the course ot the opponents of MI. Mowat during the coming elections for the Domin- ion Pa1liament. Had Mr. Mowat been defeated MnMeredilh would have been cull- ed upon to form a ministry. This would have been a difficult task for him as the men at his command are lacking both in ability and experi- ence. People who have confidence in the Dominion Government have confidence in Mr. Meredith and his ioilowers, but beyond this the trust is lost. They cannot easily forget the years spent by Sir John Mac.- donaid in endeavoring to wrest On- tario’s rights from her, and how the great Conservative Chieftain was during those years backed up by Mr. Meredith and his party. Mr. Mowat’s splendid victory is due to different causes. He has been remarkably successful with whatever he has undertaken, and the electors of Ontario have every confidence in his good judgment. his rare abilities and his probity of mind. The most careful scrutiny has never been able to detect any- thing savoring of scandal. and his legislation has been along the line 01 public opinion. No doubt many voted for his continuance in, office who could not agree with him in every measure passed during the eighteen years he has been in pow- er. In would be strange, indeed, if a gOVernment would make no mis- takes in so long a time. The people of this province evidently did not judge him by any individual Act, but by his legislation as a whole. The returns of the elections, from all parts of the province, show that Mr. Mowat’s government has been sustained, and that his majority will be about 20 in the new house. In most cases the gentlemen elected are men of good ability, but out of about ninety contests it is not sur- prising that some strong candidates were defeated by others who have yet to make their mark. This was noticeably the case in Hamilton and Simcoe, where the Provinctal Secretary and the Minister of Ag- riculture, respectively met with de- feat. RICHMOND HILL.
