As the present year is drawing to a close the citizens of Toronto are eagerly d1scussing the question, “ \Vho is the man to ï¬ll the chair of Chiel Magistrate for 1891.†\Vith all the bluster in several of the city newspapers during the present year Ald. E. A. Macdonald is an in- defatigable worker. He delights in taking a stand against opponents, though his success is extremely varied. He claims to he the nom- inee ot the East York Conservatives tor the House 0t Commons, and is spending considerable time in work- ing up the voters’ lists. At a court held at Eglinton on Tuesday before At the Fire Brigade meeting on Monday evening the question was asked, “ What about that clock? †meaning, of course, the clock which was won by the Richmond Hill Fire Brigade at the Toronto Tournament in July last. Some of the members. especially those who took part in the contests of the dav, naturally feel a li‘t'tle'sore to think the time-piece has not been forwarded. The races were hard ones, and had it been un- derstood beforehand that they were merely for enjoyment, we venture to say there would have been very few starters. A couple of months ago Ald. E. King Dodds, as chairman of the cxtizens’ committee, was waited upon in relerence to this much- prized trophy, when he informed the modest secretary of our brigade that it Would be shipped without delay. He qualified his guarantee, however, by reminding the messen- ger that “ the whole world does not revolve around the Richmond Hill Fire Hall.†Come now, Mr. Chalrâ€" man, no more shuffling about this little matter. If funds will admit of the clock being given, send it along at once ; if there is no money in the treasury, say so, and let the boys know what you mean to do about it. This appears to have been the case in the petition against the re» turn of Dr. Gilmour for West York. For months it was rt‘mored that at the proper time various charges would be brought against the Sitting member. but on the trial being call- ed thay collapsed at once. Even particulars had not been given, and Mr. J. S. Fullerton, who appeared for the petitioner, said that alter looking into the matter he had no evidence to otter in support of the petition. The case came up before Justices McLennan and Falconbridge, and scarcely lasted ten minutes. The learned gentlemen said they could detect no evidence of corrupt prac- tices to disqualify the member, and dismissed the case with costs. 10n. It would be idle to endeavor to pick flaws in the law relating to cor.- rroverted electlons. It is probably the best that has ever been on the Statutes, and if it is now and again abUSed it is not the fault ol the law- makers. It does seem thatpetitions are frequently presented against the return of members to the Legislative Assembly When there is no reason to ï¬nd serious fault with the elect- Cï¬ï¬héeâ€"O. J. Brown.
