Encourage it .‘ I On the evening of Sunday, {let ult., Rev. Mr Scott, of Toronto, \lt‘llVCI‘ed ill] intercsting sermon in the Methodist Church. On the following Monday evening, the Rev. Mr. \Vriuht who, about ten years ago, labored on the Methodist circuit here, according to previous announceâ€" ment should have given {1. lecture on the Mexican lloniinions, which, for the good of his health, he had been visiting during the last. three years. The lecturer ap- peared, but the audience being so small, he dcctded not to speak on the subjuct. The rev. gentleman is credited as an excellent speaker, and those [JR-Sent would gladly huve heurd him. He was announced to address the Colcraino seat ion the next evening. The 23rd nlb., witnessed a. fire at the residence of Mr. John \Vatkins. The drums were quickly extinguished. In the evening a. meeting was held in connection with the Methodist Sabbath School, the Object being an onrleuVor to make preparations for an anniversary festival. It was decided to have a straw- berry festival and entertainment on the 7th of July. Posters Will be issued shortly. The garden party of Mt. Lebanon Sub bath School was held on the 24th nlt. Extensive preparations had been made on Mr. Edwin Hmnbly’s lawn, and every- thing pluced in readiness for a large turn- out. The day opened like the budding flower. Nature apparently was rcjuicing over the “good time Coming,” when a multitude should enter upon the fasci- nating scene, and having feasted upon the pleasures of the breezy shade, should jliyously seat themselves by tables heavily burdened with the Cll’)lCL‘St, daiuticst, most delicious and enticing “vands that the people with her assistance were capâ€" able of producing for this anniversary celebration. Bright and early the buxom youth might have been seen wcuding their way toward “beautv‘s haunt,” and later on the older people swarmed forth from their several abodes eager to partic- ipate in the enjoyments of the day. An immense crowd was soon on hand. Nob- leton band furnished music during the afternoon and evening. After ten. had been served a. pleasant entertainment was given, in which the Revs. Messrs. Mcâ€" Laughlin and Edwards, and MLHanibly, S. S. superintendent; Mrs. McLaughlin, the Misses McLaughlin, McCutcheon and M. Agar assisted. Especially shall we notice Rev. Mr. McLaughlin’s onslaught upon the old bachelors and maids. So strongly did he urge, by persuasion, that they should forsake celibacy, that we need not be surprised if we should have a wholesale dcxertion from the old es- tablished ranks of buchclorism and maidenhood. The rey. gentleman eviâ€" dcntly has exceedingly great faith in the “twain shall be one flesh ” system, and is, therefore, a hearty advocate of it. The Rev. Mr. Edwards favored his lic ers with it good general address. EdWin Humbly, superintendent, for some time, giving an account of the working of the school, which, though or- ganized only about fifteen months ago, , has grown to such immense proportions that those who formerly regarded the movement with suspicion, have been forced to acknowledge their misconcept- being 31-- Mr. i Spoke H, (31'E’ITO; ST. In the matter of dress their cos tumes compared strangely with the thread here, Weather beaten suits of‘ the Hill b vys, several of the latter’s garments huvini: dune signal service yearsago “lion the Young Canadians Were at their zen- ith. ()n the whole probably the \Voston players were faster runners, but their op- ponents eclipsed them in picking up the bull, sharp checking; and paitlculdrlv in what is known as pass play. There was only one foul allowed during the match, and there was very little wild throwing, which was evident from the fact that the hull was not once outside of the field. The Wostun centre was an expert in making the draw, but the slight advan- tuge gained in this way was generally counterbalanced by the rubber being re- turned in the opposile direction. There was scurCcly :1 weak point in the Hill tennimnd the home players led by Arthur Pugsleyâ€"who seemed to lend inspiration to his comrades -â€" were particularly strong. The firm game lasted only 1 of a minute and was captured by J. Piper. In the second C. \Viley scored after 10 minutes" play. In the third the ball was put through by \V. Powell, after 23 min~ utes’ play, and Arthur Pugslcy finished the match by sending the brill between the flags after it had been flying up and down for-5 minutes. The usual cheers were given and players and spectators left the field. Mopâ€"â€" Aurora. '. vl 1H . h'l. men" It. The funeral Of the late John Ashton took place on Friday Inst.
