Committed for Trial. A rather serious affair took place at the Woodbiidge toll-gate on Tuesday night of last. week. The row that led to the shooting was the culmination of trouble that. has been brewing for some time over the collection cf tolls on the Vaughan gravel road. The road is the property 0.‘ a company organizud forty years uco, having a. charter that will expire ten yean hence. For some time efforts have been made to have the toll- nutcs abolished. Al. the lust session of the Ontario Legislutute an amendment was made to the General. Road Company‘s Act \vhol’eby rm inrpector could order at road to be put In ptopt‘r repair, and in the event of to do the managing committee fiiiliug so the right to collccf tolls would be furfrited. Eurly in the spring Peter S. Gibson, the inspector under the Act, directed lll‘lt the road should bu repaired. Tllrccmoutbs, tbe time Allowed by 14W, ; elapsed, and as Ills Work was not completed he ordered thiit the toll gates he tiikcu down. The gate keepers still continued to collect tall in spite of the protests of the residents. Township sciicitor, Lawrence, po>ted up copies of the notice that had been served on the gate kwpers, but still travellers Were obliged to par. On Tuesday evening a des- pt'l‘flle move was resolved on. About 50 or (30 men from the neighboring villages us- scmtlud ul. chiullurg and resolved to de- molish the oficnuive gates. They slurtcd along the Vunglmn road toward Woodbridpa -~iu antions, on llursebuck and on fear. There are three gates on the rond and ‘the first was torn from its hinges and the wilds pulled down without any opposition. The second shared the same fate, and a rope Was hitched to the lick-pet‘s house as if to Cum- pleto the work of demolition. It. seemed to be morcly no attempt to Scare the inmates us no dainngc was done. The third gute, at the outskirts of the Village of \Voodbridgu, was the scene of the chooting iiFfrriv. it was it» bout 11 o‘clock when Mrs. McIntosh, who is employed as keeper of the gate, was awaken. ed by the approach of the crowd. She came out and deniundcd the toll, and u stormy al- ternation ensued, in which unpui-liuinei.lnry language wne used on both sides. The door of the house, which stands piirtly on the road allowance, \viis kicked open, and Alex. Moln- tosh come to his wife‘s assistance. Tho unto was now off the hinges and the men were. working laboriously at the heavy posts fastened strongly in the ground. Mull-lush was roughly bundled in the crowd, and he disappeared Into the house. returning uitb u short-burrelled cavalry musket. In the skirmish that followed the gun was discharg- ed and John Ireland fell in the road Willi a charge of shot in his thigh. Arthur Hal. lingshead seized the gun from Mclutmh‘s hands and broke the stock on the post. The Work of demolishing the guts was finirhvd and the crowd dispersed, while Mr. Ireland's friends removed h m to Dr. McLean‘s surgery for treatmint. The. entiie charge had (In- tered his thigh within a sr-me about. four inches in diameter. Only eight grains could be extracted out of tl.c 52 thut bud entered the flush. The patient, was after- wards remored to his home nt Kitinburg, where he is now under cure of Dr. Rubinm-n. County Constable Hashim took the cuss in hand, but; had much (litticulty in finding evidence. No one connected with the ilffiiir cared to divulge the fuel. Friday morning he felt that llS had obtained sufficient. evi- dence for a preliminary bearing and arrested Alex. McIntosh on :1 Warrant charging him with shooting with intent to do grievous bodily harm. High Constable Jones had in the meantime mode preparations for arrest- iug him on H charge of attempted murder, but was arrested on the lesser charge first. A preliminnry trial was held before County Magistrate Wallis, and alter much conflicting evidence the magistrate found sullicicnt evidence to send the case for trial. Bell was afterwards accepted and the prisoner was relcaaed from custody. PERSONALS. Rev. J. H. Starr and wife have been visit.- lng friends in the village this Week.
