MAPLE ONT Richmond Bill’n Civic Holiday on Friday last was successful in almust every particular. The crowd from nuclying districts was not as large as might have been desired, but this was no doubt owing to Ihe late haerst. and to lhe anxiety of people to gather in their perishable pro ducts. The villagers, however, old and young, rich and poor. male and female, turned nut well, and as the name of the holiday implies, it was a. genuine day for the citizens, just what. all such days lhnuld be. The morning sports Were opened with a lacrosse match between the married and the single men of the village. After some exciting play the honors fell to the young;r men. Several “fouls†were claimed, but the referee ruled they were trifling offences, and the play was allowed to proceed. Mr. B.†Redditt was referee. and the game was governed according to the London dâ€: Lancashire rules. When the ï¬re alarm sounded shortly after 11 a. in. there was a general stam- pede to the tire hall, each department be- ing anxious to reach the scene of the ï¬re in the least possible time. The ï¬re was located at the rear of Mr. Proctnr‘s new brick dwelling, corner of Centre and Elizabeth Sta. The hosemen were ï¬rst on the ground, the ï¬re-vngiue came next and were closely followed by the hunk- and-ladder men. Although there were one or two “hitches†the tire was quickly extinguished and with little exertion. The fact was patent that no miniature ï¬re was of much use to test the skill of the brigade. In the afternoon the list of Contests, must have been as exciting and as diverâ€" siï¬ed as the. Olympic games of anCIent Greece. They embraced tests of endur- ance, strength, agility, determination. temper and ambition. The contestants’ ages ranged from 8 years to the shady side of furty, and the effons to win a. prize Were evinced as much in wardens. councillors, merchants, mechanics and professional men, as in boys and gills in the second reader. Several of the con- tests afforded much amusement to the spectators, especially the boot race and sack race. After most of the races had been dis- posed of the lacrosse match between the Ath)eties, of Toronto, and the home team, commenced. It proved one of the most interesting matches of the season, each side doing excellent work which brought forth much applause from the Grand stand. The result was in favor of the home team by two games to one. In the evening the lacrosse boys gave a Promenade Concert in the Agricultural Hall, the village band and Ampliion 0r- chestra furnishing the principal part of the entertainment. As time did not per mlt in the afternnon, the 'l‘ng-ot-war con- test as well as Bobbing the Bun, came 03 in the evening. Both of these feats created tremendous excitement. Smnk- ing races, sack races. foot races, &c. were also in order, and a good time generally was spent.
