A Bell" m) Trip Whirl: You ousht to Take This Your. It 13' can often asked why should Can- ladians travel to Europe to View the natural beauties of the Continent, when some of the grandest scenery of lake, river and moun- tain is spread out before them at their own door? The question is quite pertinent, as entire- ly too many of our people follow the "beat- en route ” of travel in foreign countries, passing by at home some of the greatest natural wonders of the world. Perhaps, in many instances, this ignoring of our own country is done thoughtlesslv and for lack of information. How many of our readers for instance. are aware that a continuous waterway exists through the heart of On- tario between Ottawa and Kingston '2 And such a charming waterwayâ€"dozens of beautiful clear lakes, thousands of pictur- esque islands and the great Rirleau Canal. No more interesting and attractive trip can be taken than that furnished by the steamer James Swift over this wonderful route. The steamer, a staunch new vessel. by the way, is in every respect modernly equipped. She has airy. comfortable stateA rooms, is electric lighted, and is officered, from the courteous Captain Noonan down to the pretty cabin-maid. with a. crew who vie with each other in contributing to the comfort and pleasure of the passengers. The trip itself is a. constant series of sur- prises. Now we are voyaging over a broad expanse of sparkling water: now we are winding in and about an apparently inter- minable archipelago of beautifully wooded islands ; now it would seem that the steam~ er is certain to beach herself upon the shore toward which she is directly heading, when suddenly an opening appears and the boat glides cautiously into a. narrow channel, where the daylightis almost obscured by the overhanging foliage; again we are going through the locks, which at intervals occur, but none of which are unin- teresting. 0n the contrary. each lock has a. little history of its own, the details of which the kindly pilot cxpressively relates to you in the choicest dialect. i ,r, t "as :1 Sharp Triangular Blnlle. The triangular blade is very sharp and measures 16 centimetres, about iii inches, from the point to the guard. Its greatest thickness is "_"_, céntimetres, about aninch. I A y ,3,LJ,: I, The trip occupies about a. day and a half. The boat leaves Kingston at six 3. m. Mondays and Thursdays of each week, and arrives at. Ottawa. about: eight. o‘clock the following evening. Rehuruingleaves (mum). at three p. m., Tuesdays and Fridays, reaching Kingston the evening of the follpwifig day. Had wee time we Would like to refer to the splendid fishing grounds to be fuund in these lakes, and to the romantic camping spots whence the tired business man may flee ami be absolutely out of reach of worrying business. Communicate with Captain D. Noonan. Kingston P. 0., and you will receive all the necessary informa- tion as to rates, etc. But do yourself a. iavor and go through the Rideau Lakes S(,his summer. incidents or the Famous Baille Showing \ Bravery and Charity. ‘ At the battle of ‘u‘v'aterloo a. Scotch color sergeant, who had been mortally wounded fell into a ditch, and one of his comrades, missing the flag, went straight to the ditch Where he had seen the Highlander fall. Meantime the enemy were charging vigor- ously. His comrade \ried to disengage the flag from the hands of the wounded High- lander, but as he could not succeed he hoisted the wounded man on his shoulder, thus carrying both sergeant and flag. The enemy, who were charging, seeing this good deed, shopped suddenly, crying “ Bravo l bravo, l'Ecossaia !" They did not charge again till the brave man had rejoined his company. Dhring the retreat which followed this battle two companies of field artillery stop- ped under orders near Loissons, at a. village a little distance from the main road. The mayor was sent for to make the cus- tomary distribution of food, etc., which was requisitioned, that it might be done without confusion. It seemed only a. moment before all the bread was collected. each inhabitant willingly giving his own part, and the mayor ordered that lots should be drawn who should give acow to furnish meat for the soldiers. The lot tell on a poor, old. in. firm woman. who with some difficulty dragged herself forward, leaning on her stick, to speak to the mayor. “The cow,” she said, “ which you wish to take from me is all I have; she is both my means of living iand my companion, and if you kill her \thcre is nothing left. for me but to die. too." le‘he mayor was inflexible, and the ax was raised to kill the cow when the artillery men cried with one voice: “What does it signify? "We will fancy this is Friday and fast most Willingly." They returned the cow to the old woman, and she led it away with tears of joy and gratitude. A New Telephone. William Marshall. of New Yorkfhad pre- pared a curiosity for the electricians. He began by taking up an ordinary book, and placing in the leaves several slips of tin foil 1:5 inches Wide and 4 inches long. Then he attached a couple of fine wires, closed the book and carried the other end of the Wires to another room, where they were at- tached to the transmitter of a telephone. Then a conversmion began, with M r. Mar- shall in one room and one of the persons in the roam where the book lay. lint-h word that came from the book could bedisiinctly heard in every corner of the room. It is Silltl the new principle is the direct opposite of the Bell principle . The latter is the magneto receiver; the new one electro-static. As de- scribed by Mr. Marshall, the invention con- sists essentially of a. telephonic system, comprising speaking condensers and an in- duction coil at eaclistation, each in-luutinn coil having two secondary wires and a. pri- mary wire, the opposite ends of each sec- ondary Wire being connected with the oppo- site poles of the speaking condensers. The accompanying cut is an authentic represenmtion of the dagger used by the assassin Cesario in mkmg the life of Presi- dentCarnot. Cesario remained in Cebte, where he had been working for several monthain a. bakery. until June 9.3, when he left for Lyons, the scene of the crime. The dagger wasrpurchased in Cette on June current here that the fortifications of Que~ bec’s citadel were beingpermitted to fall into decay, and that as a. matter of fact some 0 the secret underground passages connecLing the fortress with the city and with the Mar- tello towers on the old Plains of Abraham had fallen in and become filled 11p and abso- luter useless. Before the Withdrawal of British troops from Canada, some twenty years ago, com- panies of the Royal Engineers were engaged in keeping the citadel in perfect, repair. That the recent alarm created by the neglect into which the fortress has fallen is not exaggerated is shown by the annual report of the Department of Militia and Defense, recently submitted to Parliament, in which Colonel Panet, the Deputy Minis- ter, called official attention to the preSent dilapidated and even dangerous state of some of the city walls and fortifications. He recommends an increase in the pres ent strength of the battery at. the citadel, to include a small body of artificers, or a smell engineer company, under the control of a competent officer, by which means a. systematic and intelligent management of necessary repairs would be always available. Unless this is done Quebec's elaborate sys- tem of fortifications, that has {or so many years past proved one of the principal at- tractions for tourists. will speedily crumble into a mass of ruins. The money spent upon these works in the past is simply incredible. \Vooden fortifica- tions were erected here by the French colonists, and so heavy was the expenditure, together with what was boodled by Bigot, the intendaut and his associates, that Louis XIV. is reported to have asked Whether the fortifications of Quebec were built of gold. The present walls, which replace those first erected by the Royal Engineers, date back to 1823, and were carried out accord- ing to plans submittted to and approved by the Duke of Wellington at a cost. of some $25,000,000. A very curious temperance society exists in the Siberian village of Ashlyke. Every year, in September, the members meet in the church and make a solemn promise to abstain from wine and spirits for a. whole year. They also sign an agreement that any person breaking the pledge shall pay a. fine of ‘25 roubles to the church and submit to be spatupon by his more continent fellows. The most peculiar feature of the whole business, however, is that the members on the one day of the year when the pledge expires allow themselves wine and brandy during the few hours whichintervene before he pledge for the ensuing yen‘ is made. Ferguson, partner of Mr. Richard Smith in the marble buisness at Merrickville, is well known to most: resi- dents of that vicinily. He went through an illness that nearly brought him it death’s door, and in an interesting chat with a reporter of the Record told of the means by which his remarkable recovery was brought about “ While engaged in my business as marble cutter at Kingston," said Mr. Ferguson, “1 was taken ill in )lay,18ll3. with malarial fever. After the fever was broken I continued to have a. bad cough followed by vomiting and excruciat- ing pains in the stomach. I was under the treatment of two different physicians but their medicine did me no good, and I continued to grow Weaker and weaker, and it seemed as if I had gone into a decline. About the middle of September I was strongly urged by a. friend to give Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills a. trial. 1 had not, much hope that they would help me but from the time I commenced the Pink Pills I found myself beginning to improve, the vomitingceased and finally left me altogeth- er. I grew stronger each day, until now Iweigh l801.0untls. I never felt better in my life than I do now, although I occasion- ally take a pill yet, and am never Without a part of a. box in my pocket. I believe that. had I not been induced to take Pink Pills I would be in my grave to-day, and I am equally convinced that there is no other medicine can equal them as a blood builder and reswrer of shattered systems.
