SEM NEW ADllEliTl tili’EiZJi/tm l. KEITH LL. Thursday. Jan. 31,975 - We clip the following sale notice from an exchange :â€" This is an age of “ bargain days." 'The stores in principal centres of trade ‘do not cut much of a ï¬gure if it hey do not advertise “clearing sales," “moving sales,†stock-taking sales,†and other similar devices to catch the crcdulous public, but forgenuine bar- "gaihs the merchants are not in it with the Canadian farmer, who is forced to dispose of staple goods at away down prices as follows-:â€" Wheat worth $1 a bushel, sale price 60 cents. Barley worth 65 cents a bushel, sale “price 45 cents. Peas worth 60 cents a bushel, sale price 45 cents. Oats worth 35 cents a bushel, sale .price 28 cents. Hay worth $12 a ton, sale price 957. Hides worth $5 a cwt., sale price $1.75. Wool worth 25 cents, sale price 15 cents. Lamb worth 4 cents a pound, sale price 2% cents. Beef worth 4 cents live Weight, sale price 2 cents. Live hogs worth 5 cents, sale price 53% cents. Also ajob lot of turnips, last Sca- son’s growth, at clearing prices; 3 pumpkins for a quarter. We cannot quote lower prices, as anything below this means bankrupt farmers. The Canada Presbyterian says â€"â€" "‘Why should there have been so much said and written about the Empire giving accommodation to the Globe staflc after the ï¬re ,_which des- troyed the Globe office, As_.a rule the professional staff of a high class journal has no more personal i‘éel'ing against the staff of a rival journal than one lawyer has against another, or a professor of Calvanistic theology has against his Armenian brother. The people on the back concessions who read the rival journals have a monopoly of the personal quarrels." 'The Ontario Government were again strengthened on Monday by the election of Hon. Mr. I'Iarty, in Kingston, and Mr. Conniec, in West Algoma. The former was returned over his opponent, Dr. Sinythe, by a majority of 432, and Mr. Conmec dc- fceted by King by over 200. The result is gratifying to the Grits, as the Mowat Government now have a good working majority against Con- servatives, Patrons, Independents and .P. P. A‘s. Our Ottawa Letter. .In my letter to-day I want to lay before you a few facts 1 wish you to follow. You are all interested, deeply Interested, and want you to study out what 1 am going to say and then draw your own deduct- ions. For the moment we will turn back to ancient history. Not very far buck, either, for you will find my starting point on page 187 of Haiisnrd, or ofï¬cial do- ‘rbates (27th March) of last session. N \w carefully read what Finaree Minister Fo-ter told you then. 11‘. Foster said: “If the expenditure from the 10th of March to the end of the year should be :normal. that would leave us with n. deï¬- icil; but this government has come to the -conciusionâ€"-a wise Conclusion, which. I tank, will be echoed by tins-House, and in which the government will have the .coâ€"oireratiou and cordial help of the Htill§\'â€"[() endeavor to live this year within our income, and if our income is #1683, lo rssolulely keep down the ex penditure. so that. in the end we shalliiot :liave that ‘unwolcoine visitor which so .often made its appearance to my hon. ~friend who siis opposite me, an ugly and ill-Visaged di-ticu. A prudent business man, any prudent business concern, any private gentleman, any householder, :would take that course of action, and in ».tlie national ‘llOllSHlieeplllg it is equally g-iiicuinbcnt, it seems to me, to follow the manic-course.†‘So iiinchifor-what Minister Foster said. 'Now let usseeiwliut Minister 'Fusler has done. We were-told'by him'that‘he anticipat- ied a deï¬cit, and 450 :make his revunue (meet .axypenditure be nuuldmiudy econ~ ENTS oiny. The public accounts for the fiscal year ending Shh June, 1894, have just been issued. Let us look iliero for the promised retrenchment. I think you will look in vain. In place of ecnllnllly _we find fiesh evidence of extravagance. The expenditure on account of revenue, which In 1893 was $36,814,052, we ï¬nd last year increased to $37,685,025, while the iotnl revonue we learn was reduced from $38,l68,608 to $36,374,693. Here on the start we find ii decrease of $1.793,915 in revenue and an increase of $770,973 in expenditure. These ï¬gures bring the financial statement. up to 30th June, l894. We ï¬nd no evidence of the promised economy here. so let us look fur her. Take the lust ofï¬cial Gazette and the 6 months’ statement. of revenue and ex- penditure up to 3lst December, 1894. It Is there we learn that while the revenue Continued to decline the expenditure conâ€" tliiued to increase. The revenue that during the 6 months ending 31st Decem- ber, 1893, amounted to 813,3l5,709 only reached $6,399,486 (luring the corres- ponding months of 1894, while comparing the fun periods the expenditure incwused from $13,838.15.) to $l4,l29.4i8. Now why did Minister Foster make that promise of retrenchment to parlia- ment in Maicli last if he had no intention of carrying it on†\Vhilo you are on the hunt for retrenchiiieut just turn to page 43in the last Public AUCOIIHLR and you will find that the not debt on 30th June, 1893. was $241,681,039. and then turn to the ofï¬cial szrtle oi Saturday last and there you will ï¬nd that the net debt had been increased to $245,934,004. Is there any evidence of eCUllwllly or retrenchment to be found in these tigiiresl Even Mr. Foster himSclf will have to say no. But will he tell us candidly why he did not keep his promise? Did he think then, when trying to im- presslt upon the House, that the elect- ions would be over before the truili came out? It is not as if hlllllslcl‘ Foster and his Colle'igues were in igiioiunce of the dcprcssnm in trade that was approoehiip for he foreshadowed it in his bridge-i speech last. session when lie told you he was threatened with a deficit. That deli cit lie Said, however, would be arcrled by rigid economy and l‘cll‘cllclllllclll, which the government intended practising for the future, and what lius been the re- suli l Why the biggest deï¬cit the country has ever known will be shown when the acâ€" counts fur the year are h‘dlflhcvd on 30th June. That deï¬cit will reach at the very lowest estimate ï¬ve million dollars, while Some say seven’ million. Language too straiig cannot be used in ceiideniiiig the uiisvrable attempt of Foster to deceive you when he thought the eleciiuus would be over before the truth was known. Any one to look at that sanctiinoiiious fact \vould say that the Minister of Fi- iiance was the essence of pieiy and truth. If you wanted absolution you Would say that if any one had the powier to absolve it must be he, so good, so pure, so saiiii; ly. But looks are deceptive. If that same Foster and Aiiaiiias were sittiiiur in a game of “ draw,†I Would wager on the Minister of Finance bliifling lhe historical patron saint of limb out every time. Just glance back for a moment at [he eloquence of the language when he made that promise to the House on lllc 27lli of March last. He must have smothered up the truth in his polished (iliL'iUl'y for it never breathed again after he delivcicd himself of that flowery hamngue. Have you read it over a second limo? Is it not a perfect gem; a masterpiece of Composition 7 Yet why should we express eiii-prise'l Their only defence for the past BlXtCell years has been to lie themselves out when they were Cornered. It is only, however in drawing attention to these facts that the country will be aroused in the princi- ples of government they are now slaves to. â€"_-‘O> H. S. Examinations. JuonR LEAVING, FRENCH.
