0;” i. l '. S RICHMOND Seldom are drunken men seen reeling around the streets of this‘ village. Occasionally, however, seine i individual so far forgets himself as to make a fool of himself, and collect around him a crowd of small boys. When such does occur the question naturally comes up, “what is the lock-up for? " We do not believe in acting harshly, but certainly think that drunken men should be placed in the lock-up in order to give them achance to Sober up. No village can afford to allow the rising gener- ation to be eyewitnesses to such demoralizing influences. A few hours in a lockup will often bring people to their right senses, and will act as a check on those who are inclined to make an exhibition of themselves. mm mm, June in, 1397. This being the case he urged upon the residents of Vaughan to take the matter in hand as Mark- ham liad done, and contended that if an accident should happen on Yongc street on account of neglect to keep the road in good repair. that Vaughan would be held responsible from flu-fact that Markham had made an approâ€" priation and notified the clerk of Vaughan to that. effect. Several other ratepayers present tool; part in the discussion. and all seemed anxious that a solution Would he found by which the roads of the township might be kept in good re- pair. The general opinion seemed to be that the three divisions should be done away with, and the whole mu- nicipality made into one division. Our citizens seem tovic with one another in making ilieirlawns, their houses and their surroundings look neat and lit-autiful. Our village painter is kept. pretty busy in tour-hing up here. and there, and there are several improvements in the» building,r line. A new roof is being put on the Presbyterian Church.
