The enloljtuinment given by the Ep-2 .w0rtli League 0,11 Friday evening was .quiteasuccess. The crowd was not large on account of counter attracfi lions but all seem tohavo a good time. In the contest which was spoken of in last weeks issu9, the prize an E. L. pin was won by Miss Hattie Sisley. She. ,obtained180ma‘1'ks out of a possible‘ 210. Several others made very high marks. Miss Bessie Redditt road a paper on Hallow? on, and Mr. qu'ri- ..son also gave. .: reading. The ::;:1sic:1l part of Llu- pmgranune was well sus- tained by Misses S. 'J‘i-vnch, J. XViloy, E. Switzcz- and Mrs, Mamm. The chair was taken by Mr. W. E. Brown. PUBLIC DEBATE. Ne'xtlFriday evening at 8 o’clock there will be an interesting programme at the League. The chief feature will bea debate based on I. Cor. xiv. 3-1. The Subject is “resolved that women should not keep silence in churches.” The afl’irmative will be taken by Messrs. \V. Harrison and F. Garvin and the negative by Messrs VV. A. \Vright and A. J. Hume. Good music (will be furnished. All are welcome. GREATER THAN THE KLONDIKE RUSH. The official reports from Montreal are to the effect that the Post Office authorities have been obliged to put on extra. clerks to handle the letters arriving with subscription for the ‘amily Herald and \Voekly Star and in the Family Herald office itself, it is said that their enormous staff of clerks has had to be heavily reinforced to meet the unprecedented rush of new names. {The Edn‘xily Herald and _‘Veekly Star is a great paper and it is V a ugh; Aitke n Thlu-sd is a largP family. \V the above Naughtun l The Amnqu Plowmun’s A: to-day on the near Kettleby will take plan “7m Millikeu next, the Qt noon Rm dress th Comman Weekly Star IS a gre getting a rousing re( 1K Dix 'i'h prize to th number of prize fell 1; House. who gm last Wed FRIDAY EVENING AT LEAGU mamas: xmvasm until th Atk Iri£ Boots a M alwa 3th in 1t Ir. The audience was en~ thusiastic, and although there were nearly twenty numbers on the pro- grannne, every performer was forced to respond to encores. Mrs. (D12) Sisley, who sang here for the first time, made a favorable impression; Mrs. Hales' recitations were we” re- ceived; Miss Beattie, of Toronto, showed considerable skill as an elo- cutionist; Rev. Mr. Large’s strong basso voice was much admired ; Mas- ter Josie Gray, the boy reciter, created quite a sensation with his catchy selections, and the almost perfect ren- dering of some of Mr. Blight‘s baritone solos were very much appreciated by the critical audience. The local perâ€" formers in both vocal and instrument- al selections did well and were heart- ily encored. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Hume, Mrs. Blight, and Miss Edith Switzer. Rev. Mr. McCulloch, who acted as chairâ€" man, referred in terms of pride to the success of the entertainment, and exâ€" pressed his pleasure in presiding over such a pleasant gathering. The pro- gramme contained the followingr met with more gratifyingsnccess than did the Ladies’ Aid Society on Mon- day evening when they gave their Hallowe’en supper and entertainment in the Methodist church. The only drawback was the dark night and the threatening appearance ofrain which, no doubt, had the effect of keeping many away. The vizmds, which were first-class, were served in the school- room which, in accordance with time- honored customs, was appropriately decorated for a. hallowe’en occasion. Later in the evening all repaired to the auditorium of the church where a pleasing and extensive programme was well carried out by a large num- ber of talented artists.
