For several years past the village of Stoufl‘ville has been in a position to boast of probably the best market of any village in the province Every Thursday, market day, the streets are thronged with farmers’ wagons, and a large amount of ’money passes weekly through the hands of the *buyers and sellers. The merchants of that enterprising vil- lage are doing a good trade, and “every line of business appears to be successful. The present market house has not sufficient accommodav ition to meet the requirements of the Pplace, therefore it will be 'closed, and two others-of larger dimensions will ‘take its place. The corner stone of 'ene of these was laid on Friday last in the presence of a large and inter- ‘ested crowd. of spectators. Mr. W. F; Maolean, M. P., whoperformed :the ceremony, rcferreii tothe business ‘ enterprise of Stoufl‘ville, and spoke at length of the merits of a home market which has done more than anything else to make the village 'what it is. 'Politieal opponents since the Lib- eral Government have been in power have represented Sir Richard Cart- wright as not in sympathy with his fellow members in the Cabinet. Time and again they have said that he was not working in harmony with 'his colleagues and that he would eventually show his disapproval of 'the general policy of the Govern- ment. They painted him as one who was a believer in economy and ‘in this they were truthful. They pictured him as an enemy of extra vaganee and corruption and in this :they were equally truthful. But all along they‘failed to draw a distinc~ tion between spending large sums ‘of money judiciously and spending it extravagantly and eorruptly. Sir Richard Cartwright’s speech deliver- ed in Massey Hall on Thursday even- ing before an immense audience was :all the evidence that was required to \show that he bad faith in Canada, faith in the Government, and faith that the expenditure complain ed of would bring about good results. As Sir Richard pointed out a govern- ment might easily be justiï¬ed in making a little expenditure during a season of prosperity and growth in ‘trade, whereas it might be suicidal ‘to expend the same amount during a period of stagnation. All towns and villages are not as well situated for a. mammoth market as Stouï¬'ville is, yet in many places a home market for all kinds of \pro- duee can be created if the citizens are thrifty, and show a spirit of en- terprise. Richmond Hill has had a market scheme on its hands for some time, and although nothing has so far been decided upon it is hoped that a grain market, as well as a ;market for all kinds of farmers’ pros duoe, will be established here with satisfactory results, at no very dis- ’tant day. ’ But this will depend upon the enterprise of our citizens. One of the main objects of the ad- dress was to deal with the expendi- i‘ture, and to show what misrepresen- ‘tations and exaggerations had been ‘made during the past few months.‘ The speaker made out; a clear case,‘ and showed that his present utter-,g ances are quite consistent with his tormeihprofeseions. Foremost among these are the'guesses as to when a general election is to be expected, and as there is nothing deï¬nite to base cal- culations upon, the conclusions arriv~ ed at necessarily vary. Certain Op- position papers at ï¬rst announced,. with a great show of conï¬dence, that there was no question an election would be "‘ sprung upon the country â€' this fall, but as the weeks go by and the usual signs of battle fail to ma- terialize, they are becoming much less conï¬dent and are now busy ex- plaining why the Government is not carrying out plans which asa matter of fact were never in contemplation. Our anxious friends may possess their souls in patience. The general elec- tion will come in good time, and when it does come, it will be all too soon for the peace of mind of those who have been so busy foretelling disaster to the Government. For a long time past the citizens of Richmond Hill have had much rea. son to complain of their mail service, but as it was thought from time to time that better arrangements would be made the inconvenience was patiently borne. The mails are closed in Toronto every afternoon at ten minutes past four o’clock, yet the mail matter is not assorted here un- til about a quarter past eight. Sev- eral months ago we were assured that after September 1 the Metropoli- tan would carry the mail bags, but now we learn there is a hitch some- where. S‘omething should certainly be done to ensure a better service than we have been getting. TUESDAY, Aug. 29â€"Auction sale of real estate on lot 33. con. 3, Scarboro. the prnperty of the late Geo.
