The Markham Economist contains the following, which looks quite like a rebuke for those who are booming their high schools by a questionable means of advertising: 3“ic results of the depzu-tmental examinations will not be published in the daily papers after this year. A number of protests have been made by High School masters, who say that, comparisons are made between schools, and some schools use the number of pupils who pass as an advertisement. This leads go the belief that, the end of education is the passing of examinations. In future the resulbsof each school will be sealed and sent out to the head masters of the schools, when they will be published in the local papers, the same as the reports of the entrance examinations." i Rev. Some of the most valuable, as Well as important inventions have been patented to women, among which amay be numbered the first cook stove, a. permutation lock. having 3,000 differ- ent combinations, :1 machine for mak- ing‘scre‘ws (invented by a little girl} which revolutionized that industry. and the valuable Burden process of making horse-shoes, which resulted in a saving over the old process of many millions of dollars per year. The first patent to a Women was granted in 180%, and since then the number has increased to many thousands. These facts are interesting, not only because indicating the rapid and almost mar- Vellous growth of Women’s inte lent, but also from the fact that the. inven- tive genius of women invades fields, in which one would scarcely credit her with any interest much less know- ledge. \Ve would not be surprised that a hat~pin. corset, gloveâ€"fastener, et(:.. should he invented by women, but when we learn that such inven- tions as telescopes, making marble from lime-stone and dams and rose!" voirs, are involved, people begin to be interested. In Canada. also women are becoming interested in inventions as is evidenced by the large number of women applicants seeking patents through Marion & Marion, of Mon- treal. aniun, Sept. ’7 tn'lfi. vamarkeb, Sept. 1.9 to 21.
