THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 1900. 1RD U; Lit) As the day for the departure of the second contingent, (li'aWS near, ill)? in- terest. in its iii()l)iliz:1t.ir)'ii grows :iprmu. To those who witnessed the departure of the first clmtingent it would have seemed scarcely possible that public enthusiasm could rise to :1 greater pitch than then, but after witnessing the demonstration in this city on Thursday afternoon, when thousands lined the streets for :1 couple of hours in oneof the most intenser piercing Winds that this winter has experienced, patiently and even good-humorodly waiting to Witness the parade of the boys of D Battery, one is prepaicd to admit that at least there has been no diminution in the popular interest. Nor is it to be supposed for a moment that Ottawa is peculiar in this respect; reports from all over the country in- dicate the most widespread popular enthusiasm, coupled with an intelli- gentand critical observance of all the details of preparation. The Militia Department has been passing lhrough an entirely new and verytrying exâ€" perience, which has been a sever:- test, of its practical utility. With very little experience to aid it, the unusual situation has been courageously met, and it is gratifying to every true- hearted Canadian that the results have been in every way :Khniruhlo. and that no finer body of men, either in physique or equipment, will he found in any part. of the Imperial army. The splendid evidoncvs Wiich thv Dominion has given of its sterling and practical loyalty to the Empire is hearing exceedingly tangible results. The British are first and foremost a commercial people, and while some- wbat phlegnmtic in temperament are very thorough in their appreciation when that Sentimentis once aroused. No one will question that the» evidmwos which Unnmln has given of her sym- pathy with the Empire in the prvsn nt crisis is thoroughly genuine. and actu- ated by no ulterior motives, but, the materile lwnefits are there all the same, as is shown by the rapidly growing dispOsition on the part of the people of Great Britain to do business with Us whenever it is possible and in preference to other countries. A characteristic instance of this is re- ported from Toronto where :1 loading wholesale dry goods firm wishing to repeat an order for a. line of qooiis which had gone up in price wrote to the mzunlfmcturers in England by whom the first order waslllled, and asked them to reppat at: the prvvious figure. The answer “ yrs" was cabled at (men, and this was followvdhya letter, just received by‘the firm in To- ronto, in the course of which it said: “ “'0 cannot refuse Cunndi: thing just now in View of the patriotism they :1 'e showing sacrifice they are making for pix'e. Admiraljun and grati universal here." “ Spare the rod and spoil the child.” is an old suyin , which is often quoted by some penpe who consider that parents and guzu'diai'is of children should inflict, corporal punishment for every oifencv, be it; great or small. But a few yoaxs since it was notan unusual thing to hear of members of the teaching profession using the “ birch rod" so severely that the re» cipient was marked; yes sometimes deforms-d for life. Of course this was mostly done while angry at the pupil, or withoutzuly consideration for the (lispmitionof the child whose czu-eer in life may be thwarted and his good tendencies turned to evil ones by \In« just punishment. An orchestra waé in attendance and good songs were sung by Mr. U.F.Hall of Toronto Junction. It Comes From Down East The reappearance in our columns, after an absence Of sume years. of the Kendall’s Spaviu Cme advertisement will he, to many of our readers, like lunking upon the "face of n iamilizu' friend.” The early history of this well known remedy for lame and spavined horses is very interesting as showing the great faith in its virtues and the “down east ” cuteneSs and foresight of :1 Ver- mont farmer. Many long years ago this shrewd agricultnrist, who lived at the village of Enoshurgh Falls. a. charming little place, nestling among the green mountains of Vernmnt, had a valuable horse go lame and hearing much of a Spavin Cure, put up by Dr. Kendall, who resided in the village, decided to try it. The farmer was so struck by its marvellous effectiveness that he determined, if possible, to buy the formula. But to his utter surprise the figure demanded ran into the thousands, for the doctor was fully alive to the merits of his preparation and demanded it high price for his knowledge. The would-be purchaser was determined, however, and mort- guging his fine farm to the highest limit. against the advice of all his friends and neighbois. became the original owner with Dr. Kendall of this wonderful cure. But it was a hard, slow struggle, made none the easier to hear by his friends and neigh- bors constantly reminding him of whot a fool he had made of himself. Still he persisted, and after a. while small orders begun to dribble in. Then the inevitable occurred; these snlnll 17L Wes all things, Charity.” Gibsdu and M5. w. J.
