The World says that “the next leader of the Cbnservative party must be a new man wiuh a new pokicy, a man who will not antagon- ize the French-Canadian race.” If The World is sincere it is to be con- gratulated on its change of tone with regard to the race cry. It is plainly seen, however, that it is meant as a direct slap at Hon. N. C. Wallace. Sir Charles Tupper and Mr. Hugh John Macdonald, who stumped this province together in the recent con- test, have both decided to quit politics. The former will retire to the quiet of his home while the latter will re. smile the practice of law. Many Liberals were disappointed in the result of the elections in East York and West York, especially in the majorities which were large in each case. It is true both of the Con- servative candidates were clever cam- paigners and showed an independent spirit by the stand they took when Sir Charles Tupper, four years be- fore, tried to restore Separate Schools in the Province of Manitoba. In both ridings, however, the cry against Tarte did good service for both Mr. \‘Vallace and. Mr. Maclean. In West York Mr. Campbell lost the support ofthe C.P.R. with their en1ployes,ow- log to his championing the Canadian National Railway, which if built would be a strong competitor with the C.P.R. In East York, in addi- tion to the race cry, the Licensed V ictuallers Association and the liquor interests voted in a. body against Mr. Howell, Whom they looked upon as a. prohibitionist. ing members, and a great many French. This is not so. The Globe a few days ago gave the names of the Premier’s supporters from tie various provinces, and when the House meets the members will likely be as follows :â€"85 English Liberals, 4.") French Liberals. The above figures have not been contradicted, therefore we may conclude they are correct. “ In all its history Canada has never come through an election that left so many reasons for apprehension as the contest that closed yesterday. What the ultimate result will be of Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s dividing the two races as he has done it would re» quire a prophet to tell, but it is an intolerable condition for the English- speaking Canadians to live under the 'domination of the French. The future holds out no prospect for the realization of those ambitions, the possession of which the French-Can- adians gave evidence yesterday. \Ve cannot but regard the defeat of the Conservative party as a calamity to the people of Canada, inasmuch as it lea‘ves in control of the Govern- mentm‘en'who have been proven to be unfaithful to their trust. But it is infinitely worse that the Govern» {ment of the day should hold power by reason of the massing of one sce- tion of the community, speaking a foreign language and holding ideals alien to the governing races of the country.” From the above quotation ore might suppose that Laurier has the support only of a few English-speak- ing members, and a great many French. This is not so. The Globe ‘ It’ is safe to say that in the recent contest, or in fact during any other period, not a line can be truthfully quoted from Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s utterances to show that the Premier endeavored to disturb the good feel- ing between the English and the French in Canada. Yet what do we find. The next day after the elec- tion, the Toronto News contained the following :' RICHMOND HILL. Mr. Thornton, Conservative, was elected in West Durham over Mr. Beith, Liberal, by a majority of 40. The returning officer, however, res fuses to declare the former elected as his deposit was paid by cheque in- stead of by bank bills, according to statute. This is unfortunate, and it is hoped the technicality can be re- moved, as Mr. Thornton was evident- ly the choice of the electors. By J. H. Sanderson, V. S., “Remember Ross” is a favorite expression in The Mail & Empire these days. Ontario’s premier is charged by The Mail with assisting Laurier in the recent contest, and for this he is to be punished when the local elections take place. Such threats will not tend to peace and harmony in this country. It the Ross Government prove themselves unwor- thy of public confidence let them be replaced, but do not punish them beâ€" cause Ross spoke in favor of Laurier, or because Quebec went Liberal. The members of the Liberal Cabin- et; have been re-e'lectcd by the follow- ing majorities: Sir Wilfrid Laurier . . . . . . . .2,500' lil‘ Richard Cartwright . . . .1000 Hon. Wm. Sutherland. . . . . . .2000 ’“Dl‘Op Tai'te,” saying that “ French and English are not flying at; each other’s throats except in print.” If Mr. Tai‘te, Mr. Laurier and the whole Government would resign it would boubtless suit The World, but it would not be good for the countrv. For consummate cheek commend 11s to the Toronto World. The edi- tor in Monday’s edition points out that there is a crisis at hand, brought about by Tarte, The World says that the only peaceahl'e solution is for Tarte to withdraw from the Govern- ment, or have Laurier to dismiss him, or else let Laurier resign himself. The Telegram the same evening seems to differ with the World, and call upon the Conservative editors to 0“Drop Tarte,” saying: that “ French All of The World‘s editorial matter on Monday treats of what it calls “The Race Issue.” Previous to the elections The World says it had two charges against the Government on I the above issue, viz., lst, the hesita- 5tion of the Government in sending I the contingent to South Africa," and 2nd, “ the appointment by the Gov- ernment of Mr 'l‘arte to represent Canada at the Paris Exposition." Since the elections The World has another charge, and that is that I Quebec voted “ almost as a unit ” for ‘ {Sir Wilfrid Laurier and Hon. Mix} Torte. The country gave the verdict the 7th of Nov. 0n the first tWo qtles- ! tions. If Quebec did wrong in su'p~ porting the Laurier Government their ‘ excuse should he that they were‘‘ driven to it by papers like The! World. J Hon Hon Hon Hon Hon. Wm. Paterson . . Hon. Wm.
