Incidents during the past year in 'the lives of the three notorious bank burglars, Jones, Rutledge and Rice, ,go to show that the way of the trans- gressor is hard. Reports from detec- tives prove them to have been des- ,perate characters for several years- ,past, and during the last twelve months their record has been the ,blackest of the black. On the 22nd ~of May, 1900,they seem to have com- nnenced their operations in Canada by gagging a night watchman, and ibreaking into the Standard Bank in ‘Parkdale. The next night they ivisited Aurora, broke into ROSS’ priv- ~'ate bank, the Post Office, and “'ells’ :stables, and left for Chicago four days :affterwards. The gang were arrested in Chicago on the lst of June, and East April were handed over to the :Canadian authorities. The jury dis- .agreed in the Parkdale bank robbery «case, and during the trial for the Aurora robberies, which seemed to be; going against them, they committed :a terrible tragedy in their endeavor storescape from the county constables, who were taking them from the court 'house to the jail, by shooting through -the head Constable Boyd. They were re-captured and two days later Jones died from injuries received from the scuflie after having .been shot through the arm by Constable Stewart. The two remain- ing criminals were found guilty of breaking into the Aurora bank, and pleaded guilty to the other charges, receiving as a sentence 21 years each. On the 7th of June Rutledge committed suicide by jumping from a gallery to the jail floor. Rice, the Only survivor of the gang will be -tried for the murder of Boyd with every probability of a conviction. It is to be hoped that Canada may never again be visited by such a. band of desperadoes. The trade of Canada keeps stead-i ily increasing. .Tbc aggregate for the eleven months up to the end of May amounted to $329,352,721, as compared With $308,548,03L for the same period of the previous fiscal year. On Saturday last the Shamrncks of \Extnnu-eal defeated the Tm-outos in lu- cmsse by a scoxe of 4 to 1. Although it has often been reported in Conservative papers that Sir Wil- frid Laurier was liker to leave Cana- da to accept a position in the Imperial Privy Council, there was never any i‘eason to believe such a statement. The Premier made this clear a few days ago when he said in a public speech that he had no intention of doing such a thing. He would rather live and die in Canada, and wanted no greater honor than to‘ be at the head of the Liberal party in this country. 1Last Saturday .the Orillm lacrosse utmm defeated Barrie; )m-mvull de- ‘feated the Nationals: Elm-.1 won from Guelph : :md (11913“qu ‘wqrc beaten zby St. Kitt§‘ ~5Â¥3§v~£&; Mrs. M B rowu The Toronto-Richmond Hill lacrosse match scheduled for Saturday, June 15, has been cancelled.
