The widow and daugh- ters have their friends’ sympathy in their bereavement. Mr. Richard Thomas has purchased the John McKinnon farm at Vellorc, about 100 acres. for $5,850. Mr. \V. ’1‘. Robinson acted as judge at the Innisiil plowing match held on the farm of Mr. Spencer Crowley on Monday. Free Reprints of Splendid Paintings Mr. John Innes, who for twelve years lived among,r the miners and ranchers in our own \Vest, and who first studied art in England when a. youth, is recognized as Canada’s lead- ing, exponent, of outdoor painting. Mr. Iuncs’ two last paintings are his best. two large canvases, portraying typi- cal incidents of our \V'estern life. They are styled “ On the. edge of the Herd” and “The Miner‘s Farewell. ” The former is a striking incident of a. round-up, a cow-pnncher, thrown from his horse, being Charged upon by a. wild steer. while. a fellow-Cowboy, racing after, as preparing to throw his lasso. The held in the background grows restless and threatens to stam- pede. Behind all rise the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies. Asa Wholc the painting is a masterpiece of coloring, drawing and action.‘ “The Miner’s Farewell"depicts a mounted miner with saddle-bags bulg- ing with gold dust, homeward bound. Far down in the valley he sights his old camrades working in the sluices. A parting wave. and Cheer is exchang- ed. The background is a. mass of mountain and mist, forest and cloud. The treatment is masterly, bold and true. T re Mail and Empire has secured ex. act l-l-color reprodiwtions of these paintings, 15x20 inches in size. Every detail of color and grain is faithfully. brought out. They offer free - the choice of the two with every year’s subscription to the \Veekly, or three months’ subscription to the Daily. Both pictures are given free if a. sub- scriber sends a. Vear’s subscription to the \Veekly, in addition to his own. or if he takes the Daily for six months. See our clubbing list. 0 THE CANADIAN BOY. This magazine is the only journal of its kind published in Canada, and for patriotic reasons alone is deserving of a hearty support by the reading pub- lic of Canada. American boys‘ papers full of American sentiment have a large circulation in Canada. Theyare fast instilling American ideals into the minds of our young people. It. is high time this Were stopped. The best way to eifect a change is to produce some- thing good and attractive to take the place of the American papers and crowd them out. ’l‘hosc patriotlcally inclined should rally to the support of a good ('anadian boys‘ paper. The Canadian Boy is sol b a journal. The October number is out and has no reason to hide its head beside, much older ventures. It is full of what is elevating and stimulating {or boys to read.
