There is evidently :1 prev- alent feeling that boys in their teens can take considerable latitude here, and commit mean tricks with im- punity. It is a known fact that dur-‘ ,ing the past few years many an offender has been allowed to go frte '-because some one has pleaded in his behalf, while in other'cascs the sen- tences have been lightened by the pleadings of those who laid the charges. A number of thievish ‘tricks might be mentioned, but the latest took place last Thursday even- ing. A young lady gave an even- "ing party to a number of friends, and when refreshments were served 'it was found that a freezer of ice «cream had been taken from the back -:‘steps. The only redeeming feature “in the last case is that the party 'Were good enough, a few nights .Lafterwards, to return the can. The suggestion has been madeâ€" -‘and we think it a very good oneâ€" .that if the culprits are found out they be taken before Magistrate Ellis, cr isome other J. P., where they can be tried without the interference of local influence. To fine or imprison (-ur own citizens is often an unpleasant duty, but a sharp check now might save them a trip to Kingston in years â€"to come. 22 King Edward has made a request that his birthday, November 9,"be observed in Canada as a holiday. Little wonder is it that the Toronto dailies, Toronto merchants, and l.us-' .iness men in other cities, are raising objections to. the proposal. Thanks- giving Day will be observed in November, and it is argued that an- =other holiday in the same month is unnecessary. There are doubtless too many holidays. vThcy interfere with business and have a tendency to lighten men’s pockets of ready cash. Canada is loyal to King I‘d- ward, and if our citizens are seen 01. the 9th of November with their everyday clothes on, it need not le taken as an indication of a lack of “patriotism. The Evening Star of Tuesday says that early in this year the Conserv- ative organizersthrough primplileteer Maybee, canvassed the Censcr ‘at‘ive candidates as to their choice for the leadership of the party in Ontario. It is said that forty-nine candidates voted, and that the result was as follows: Mr. \V. F. lllaclcan, 19; Dr. Beatiie Nesbitt, 18'; Iilr. J. P. 'Whitncy, 7; Mr. J. J. boy, 8. Mr. Maclcan is a hustler. LADIES HOME JOURNAL. lie Thanksgiving uunilwr of,Th.~ Ladics’ Home Journal is replctc with good fiction and interesting and noch features.
