Though of course, we do not agree with everything in them we take a certain‘pleasure in referring to the publications of‘the “Witness†Ofï¬ce as we cannot but acknowledge that they deserve the esteem in which they are held throughout the Do- minion. The publishers have lad their ways anii they have held to them through thick and thin. Their publications are perhaps as clean and digniï¬ed us is possible to make them. started it: has grown at the astonish ing rate of nearly a thousand new subscribel‘sa month. The price is only seventy-ï¬ve cents to January lst, 1903, if paid before the end of January. It is sixteen pages and is issued every Friday. There are wants however which even these big papers do not supply, "as illustrated by the experience of the publishers of the “Witness.†The Dougalls long ago realized the importance of a young people’s paper, suitable for Sunday reading. The‘ "Northern Messenger," at 30cts. per annum, like the “Witness,†has been ahousehold world all over Canada as long as anyone can remember. It seems to meet its-own sort of “Bk d well, as it claims a standing circula- tion of over ï¬fty thousand copies a .week. But what interested us of late is a new departure in journalism on the cpart of the same house. About a year ago they hit, as resu ts have proved on another need in journalism. It was the need of a good eclectic which, for a. dollar a year, and Within the compass of the business man’s time for reading} would supply the best articles that appear during a week in the great ‘ publications ofï¬the world in general. The newest publication is appro- priately called “World Wide.†It has surprised a great many people to ï¬nd how much of the most in- teresting and informing current reading they can get in such small compass and for so small a price. II‘here is probably no other eclectic published that wouldgive the ordin- ary reader whose time for reading is limited the same satisfaction. We see it stated that ever since it was $1, for example lay out; to supply every interest of a family, the news and editorial being backed up by many interestlng features such as stories, cookery, dress-making, fancy work, Boys, Children’s, Home de- partments, agricultural, legal, medical, numismatic, chess and many other special departments. But most people take several pub- lications to meet the varied .needs and tastes of an intelligent family. Probably along with their local paper one of the big metropolitan daily or weekly newspapers comes next in consideration. Large metropolitan papers such as the Montreal Witness, Daily edition at $3 and Weekly at 214 It is quite natural that a ï¬re in a neighbors‘ house should 'intorest us more than the burning of a whole village in some country of the geography and people of which we know little or nothing. That is why the local paper has such a ï¬rm hold on its subscribers. One must take it because one is so immediately in- terested in the news it gives. The Tlmrnhill skating Rink le.
