Within the last few years the con- ilmption of chickens has increased in Canada; the price realized for plump chickens has advanced. Both the increase in consumption and the éédvance in price are due to the Business of crate fattening chickens. The chickens that realize the high- est market price today are chickens that are fatted and prepared for market in accordance with the direc- tions issued by the Dominion De- partment of Agriculture. Chickens from the Ontario and Quebec Illuso tration ctntions were sold a few days ago to Mr. Henry Gatehouse for 12 cts.per pound live weight; and to the anndian Produce 00., Toronto, Ont.‘ for 11 cts. per pound, live weight. These are profitable prices that can be obtained by any farmer shipping the same quality of chickens to Montreal or Toronto. be paid : J. A. Ireland, mad wnrk Jas. \Vilson. lumber . . . . . . It would he well if people in gen- eral Would profit by the example re- cently set them by the late Duke of YVch ninsrcr and Lord Salisbury, a former Prime Minister of England. Niel: of those gentlemen gave in- structions that his funeral expenses Were to be kept low, and in each case his request was respected. Laid Salisbury stipulated that his Burial expenses were not to exceed $100, and as a matter of fact they Were only $70. The expenses in connection with the funeral of' the Duke of Westminster were only $35. It is A common occurrence for many pe01 h; who cannot afford it to go in- to debt in the interment of relatives. The above gentlemen evidently saw the folly of extravagance at such a time, and no doubt took the stand they did hoping that others might benefit by their example. S.
