It is not generally known that Germany has intact the indemnity which was paid by France after the great. war of 1870. In the Julius- trum of Spandau this enormous sum [11 gold, amounting to $30,000,000 in value lies hidden in boxes. The little town 15 miles outside Berlin. is most heavily gui‘x'isoned, and there are several giant arsenals and 8.111â€" mzunition stores, so that any scheme to lay hold of the sum of money would be doomed to defeat at the outset. The idea in hoarding up this vast sum is original. It is that. there may be money ready at any moment to provide for one .weok's operations in the way of mobilization. This conviction is strengthened by a number ’ of other cases reported throughout the country where this great Kidney remedy has been used, and Bright's Disease vanquished. Ottawa, Ont., Sept. 14,â€"(Spccial). -â€"The recent numerous deaths of prominent men from Bright's Disease recalls the case 01' Geo. H. Kent, of ‘408 Gilmour St. this city‘ Mr. Kent’s cure caused great exciteâ€" ment at the time. People who had heard of it came from far and near 'to see him, and all went away conâ€" vinced that Dodd's Kidney Pills will cure Bright's Disnnso. While Watching at his bedside, his wife happened to read an advertiseL ment that said Dodd’s Kidney P-ills would cure Bright‘s Disease. They were sent for as a Inst. resort. From almost the ï¬rst dose Mr. Kent says he felt beneï¬ted by them. After taking four boxes he was able to sit up. Seventeen boxes cured him com- plctely. Will Hold a. This flume will be one ‘0! the largest steel pipes in the ‘won'd. It will have a diameter of ‘18 feet and will be 5,880 feet long. {The steel plates from which it will be made have a thickness of half an inch and in putting them together over 200 tons of rivets will be used, lts dtimneter is so large that it would be impossible to put it to- gether at any machine shop and ship it to Niagara, and so a tem- porary plant for building it will be m‘octed on the Canadian side at Niaâ€" gara. . g This temporary plant will consist lot a. power house. a. machine shop, boiler shop, ofï¬ce and boarding house. To carry the parts from the shops to the point where they will enter into the large. flume or pipe a temporary railroad will be built along the route of the flume to handle the steel. It is suc'h a mamâ€" moth contract that to build the flumc will take from ten to sixteen months. ' The ï¬ume will extend from the fore-bay of the Ontario Power Com- pany along the base of a bluï¬â€™ at the rear of Victoria. Park to a point just below Table Rock, the famous View point, and there its waters will be diveer through penstocks to tur- bines to be installed in a power house at the water's edge. The flume, from an engineering point. will he well worth watching diu‘lng construction, for no doubt it will have important features. ï¬ecent Deaths of Prominent Men From the Most Dreaded of all Maladies Recalls the Fact that Dodd’s Kidney Pills have Con- quered It. It was intimated some little time ago that the Ontario Power com- pany would use California redwood in the construction of this flume. It was also intimated that other Woods would have favor, and the fact is a careful search was made and a thor- ough investigation made of other notable flumes carrying water in the Country. These flumcs are not so numerous in the east as they are in the west, but after all the research steel has been adopted as the mater- ial to be used. Asdvocatcs of wood claimed that a steel flume would rust and rot out quicker than a flume of wood, but the fact was evi- dent that should the flume be built of wood steel hoops would have to be used to make it ï¬rm, and these stood just as much chance of going to pieces as the allâ€"steel flume. Arrived here they breathlessly rushed into the bureau of marriages. but the clerk shook his head. He had receivâ€" ed a telegraphic message ordering him not to issue a license, and was comâ€" pelled to refuse the request of the anxious couple. He advised them to return to the protection of Bird’s Nest, but the pair were ï¬lled with sturdy determination, and, returning to the station, took train to Salis- bury. They immediately calied on Justice Hearne. got the license, and repaired to the Rev. Clay Turnet, who was persuaded to leave his warm bed, Where he had been locked in slumber for a. couple of hours. and marry them. The happy couple then went to the hotel, and the following morn- ing start-ed on their honeymoon. Hundreds of people who had heard of the. romantic marriage accom- panied them to the station. and as the train glided out they had the satisfaction of witnessing the arrival of their fathers, to whom they wav- ed their handkerchiefs and kissed their hands, to the great delight of the populace. Long before the honâ€" eymoon was over they received the usual forgiveness. together with an invitation to spend a. few months with their parents whenever they felt so inclined. Parental anger does not last long in the States. A few days after this romantic wedding Howard Sturgess, aged twenty. and Lolis Harrell, aged ï¬f- tren, both of Milford, determined to follow in the footsteps of Mr. and They rushed to the station, and reached it just as the train was steaming out. The superintendent of the road was requested to hold the tljain at the next depot, but unfortuâ€" nately the couple had already inter- vieWed him and probably the beâ€" seeching eyes of the runaway .bride had something to do with his re- fusal to stop the train. Then the excited fathers got relays of horses and started on a wild crossâ€"country run after the Wayward couple, mak- ing for Pocomoke, where it was beâ€" lieved they intended to stop. as a means of solving the problem to his anxious ï¬ance. and, she cheerful- ly consenting, they hired horses and started on their dark journey with out any guide and on roads which were the reverse of excellent. After many flounderings. and having lost their Way several times, they reached Laurel a few minutes AFTER MIDNIGHT. There is one little place in the States. called Laurel. which has the reputation of having celebrated more runaway marriages than even Gretna Green. Strangely enough, too. the ceremonv in a great num- ber of instances has been celebrated after midnight. A couple of weeks ago Walter Ward and Rosa West, both under age, left their homes in Bird’s Nest, which is ninety miles south of Laurel. for the purpose of getting married. Soon after they had started, which was about six in the evening, the fathers were notiï¬ed and immediately SET OFF IN PURSUIT. It would be a somewhat difficult matter in England for a couple to get married at the hour when graveâ€" yards are supposed to yawn and do other awful things, but in America, where the marriage license bureau is kept open all night like the ï¬re staâ€" tion and the telegraph ofï¬ce. mid- night is becoming quite a fashionable hour for the tying of the marriage knot. Why such a time should be preferred it would be difï¬cult to say, for as a crusty old bachelor remark- ed on one occasion, it seems like ad- ding to the horrors of the ceremony. In New York alone during the last month no fewer than sixteen mid- night marriages have been celebrated, and the number is said to be stead- ily increasing. In many instances the bridal party visit the theatre be- forehand, return to the house, Where an appetizing supper awaits them, then repair to the church on the stroke of twelve. when the knot is tied. concluding the happy night with a dance or an automobile ride. Here they were met with a. like re- fusal. and were almost in despair, expecting every moment to be over- taken by their respective parents, when the youthful bridegrooinâ€"toâ€"be bethought him of the little tOWn of Laurel. which is about sixteen miles from Salisbury.
