In Owen Sound, on Friday, Mr. A. (,‘r. McKay, M. 1’. P. for North Grey, who was charged with slanâ€" dering‘ Matthew Beekett, aftcr the last general provincial election, was ac- quitted of the charge. The case was tried before a jury and Chief Justice Meredith, and a unanimous Verdict was given for the defence. The alleged slander consisted in Mr. McKay stating publicly that the Conservative Committee Rooms were l-cht open all night previous to the election, that eight or ten white or colored men lay in those rooms drunk or sleeping, and that the whiskey given to a man named Campbell in the committee rooms, had been drugged by Beckett. Campbell swore in ceurt that he had been drugged, and Beckett swore that the charge was absolutely un- true. Mr. McKay said that his state- ments were made in good faith and Were without malice. The case was given to the jurymen who in forty minutes returned a unanimous ver- diet for the defence. Chief Justice Hon. G. W. Ross has said as fan as himself and colleagues are con- cerned there is no foundation for the rumor that a judgeship is to be oï¬er- ed to Mr. J. J. Foy. The Premier characterizes the story as one cir- culated for political purposes. Mr. Ross says the rumor was circulated probably for the purpose of making it appear either that Mr. Fey was the only Roman Catholic of sufï¬cient note in the Province to merit such an appointment, or that the Domin- ion Government was using the powers of appointment to strengthen the Local Government by the remov- al of Mr. Foy from the field of active politics. Mr. Fey’s continuance in plblic life or his withdrawal from the House is not giving the Premier any concern from a party stand- poin“. Meredith in charging the jury cau~ tioned them about keeping party spiritout of the court. The judge asked the jury to review the whole circumstances. “It would be $311,†said be “if in this country when elections are over, they are over in fact.
