Mr. W. F. Maclean, the Dominion member for South York, has donated the extra $1.000 indemnity to the Sick Children’s Hospital. The Hos- pital is a worthy institution, and donations can be utilized there to ad- vantage. Mr. Maclean shows by this act that he disapproves of the measure which raises the annual indemnity of all members of Parlia- ment from $1,500 to $2,500. People must give Mr. Maelean credit for acting conscientiously in the above matter. If he wlshed to show his disapproval of the Act, however, he could have done it more effectively by speaking out boldly from the floor of the House. The list of accidents published in the newapapers day after day is ap- palling. It is generally thought that Americans across the line are more reckless of life than are Canadians, but, unfin'tunately it would seem we are gaining on our neighbors in the way of reckless carelessness. Drown- ing accidents in canoes and small sail boats are tar too common. Re~ ports go to show that young men fre- Quently take chances not only with their own lives, but with the lives of those whom they should care for and protect. Those who are inclined to be venturesome should bear in mind that there is a. vast difference be- tween heroism and foolhardiness. The law providing,r for the punish- ment of those who adulterate foods is to be enforced rigidly, and parties found guilty will be dealt with as severely as the statutes allow. The Deputy Minister of Inland Revenue states that the tests will he continued and when a dealer is detected the punishment will be inflicted ‘11 every case in as severe a. manner as the nature of the offence calls for. Spices, maple syrup, maple sugar ind coffee are found to be more fre- quently adulterated than any other class of foodstufi's. but in many cases the adulteration does not always mean that harmful ingredients are used, but that the customer is cheat- ed hy the induction of cheaper com- modities. «my @119 giissrnl. The royal commission, under tle presidency of the Prince of Wales, appointed in April, 1903, to study the question of the importation of food in time of war and similar sub- jects has inst presented its report to the BritiSh parliament. The contents of the report have not yet been pub_ lished, but on the whole it is under- : ood they are re-assuring. The main report, which is concurred in by all the commissioners, concludes that there is no cause for apprehen- sion or uneasiness because it would be virtually impossible, noting the adequacy of the fleet, for the whole of the British coasts to be blockaded simultaneously. At the same time the commissioners do not discourage the experiment in the direction of the storage of grains for times of emergency. An important reserva- tion. almost equal to a minority re- port, signed by the Duke of Suther- land and some others of the com- missioners. points out that at certain seasons of the year there is only six weeks‘ reserve of grain stored in England, and strongly urges the im- portance of the adoption of a. nation- al system of grain storage.
