Ayl‘esworth, the newly appointed PostmastervGeneral, who is the Liberal standard-bearer in North York, is being attacked by his opponents, not only because he is a lawyerI but more partienlarly because he is a lawyer of high standing. Were he a second-rate lawyer he might escape some of the abuse that is now being showered upon him. A story is told of a lawyer who was some time ago a candidate in an election campaign in one of the states across the lines. His friends were forced to admit that he was a mem- ber of the legal profession, but their plea was that “ he was not much ofa lawyer.†Mr. Aylesworth's friends in North York stand at a. greater disâ€" advantage than. the American elect- ors. They know that their candidate is one of the foremost lawyers in the Dominion. A somewhat novel meeting was ï¬eld» in a Jewish synagogue in To- ronto last Sunday. It was presided over in turn by Mayor Urquhart and Premier Whitney, and the main ob. ject was to raise a fund for the relief of distressed survivors of’ the horrible massacres of Jews at different places in Russia. Care was taken not to ex- cite the feelings of those present, but a resolution was carried requesting King Edward to join in a movement in an endeavor to put a stop to the horrible butchery carried on by the Russians. The citizens of Toronto certainly met in a good cause. A hmihh rumor was in circula- ai‘ou m Sammay that The World it- wlff is a mrpomtion, and has more ï¬lm mac had? tel employ a lawyer to defend its property anti fame. Where did it ï¬nd a. public enemy to under- hte the job Eâ€"Globe. For months past the Tory papers of Toronto endeavored to make the people of this province believe that the school clauses in the Autonomy Bill were an outrage on the inhabit- ants of the new provinces in the Northwest, and that the electors were eagerly waiting to show their disap- proval on the ï¬rst opportunity. An opportunity presented itself last Thursday when the ï¬rst general elec- tion was held for the new Province of Alberta. The result was at most a clean sweep for the Liberal Govern- ment, who carried twenty or twenty- one seats out of twentyï¬ve. The Conservatives carried only three seats, and their leader, Mr. Bennett, was among the fallen. If the result is a. victory for coercionists, it at lBast goes to, show that the people of Alberta must like to be coerced. They ‘ had. the votes in. their own hands. Rinans Tabules: at drugglzm.
