literal. with. main... Max:201“ It was stated in the Toronto World last week that Mr. Smith, M. P. P. for Sault Ste. Marie “got severely called down" in the Legis- lature the day before by Premier Whitney and the Hon. Adam Beck. It appears that Mr. Smith a few evenings before had criticized Mr. Beck at Hamilton for an item of 8!,710 which was paid for convey- ing nine horses belonging to Hon. Mr. Beck and Mrs. Beck to and from the International Horse Show in England. No objection is here taken oi the item of expenditure, but by the dis‘ cussion as reported in The World the public is given to understand that the expense of transportation of Mr. Beck's horses was not paid by this province. “1 never asked, nor re. arrived any money from the province of Ontario for the exhibition or trans- portationct my horses to the Inter- national Horse Show" was Mr. Beck‘s statement. Hon. Mr. Mon- teith also said “No money had been paid for the expenSes of Mr. Beck's horses." The Premier joined in the discussion, and is reported as follows: “The coolness of the member from the Soo is refreshing. After hearing the denials of Hon. Adam Beck and Hon. Nelson Monteith he endeavors to pursue the matter still further." The above looks like a straight denial that Mr. Beck’s horses Were not paid for by the Ontario Govern- ment, but the Public Accounts show otherwise. On page 201 the items are given as follows: "To Antlantic Transport 00., transportation of horses re International Horse Show, London, $811.85; Mrs. Lilian V. Beck‘s horses, $756.81; United States Express 00., $142.33; total, $1,710.99. In the face of the above in the Government Returns what is the use of quibbling. The above money did not go into Mr. Beck’s pocket, but it was paid by the province for conveying Mr. Beck’s horses to the London Horse Show. fl ,__-_____ Chief J ust'ce Meredith on Saturday quashed the by-law passed by Toronto Cily Council, by which it was propos- cd to cancel 40 hotel licenses on the first of May. An appeal is being considered, but in all probability the real battle will be fought out at the polls at the municipal elections next January. Bar rooms are becoming more impopular year after year. Many earnest temperance men felt, however, that to cut off 40 hotel licen- ces without even a hint that they in- tended-to do so, smacked of sharp practice on the part of those who votcd for the by-Iaw. The temper- ance people have an excellent cause and can well afford to do their work fairly and above board. What many predicted has come to pass. The new redistribution bill, so far at least as Toronto is concerned, is a gerrymander. The Whitney Government gives Toronto eight members instead of four as at pres- ent. That city could be just as well scrvcd with six members as with eight, but the objection is not to the number bf members to be clcctedpl, but to the mode ofclcction. The prop- : osition is to give the city two nich bars in each of the present t‘onr rid- i ings. It has been easy to elect (3011- 7 serrativc members in the present rid- ings. It will bcjust as easy to elect two conservatives in ridin gs. ca'ch of those; lad eight ridings bccn“ made one or two Libci‘uls might have ‘ slipped in.
