RICHMOND HILL. ONT. . A A writer in defence of betting at race tracks says that horse-racing will stop if the right of gambling is taken away. We believe he is cor- rect. Horseâ€"racing, which is often referred to as the sport of gentlemen, will dwindle into insignificanee if the betting element is taken away. And so it should dwindle if it rests on such a foundation. If hundreds of men' and women who claim to love their horses will stop to think they will find that their deepest love is for the money they hope to win, and not for the noble animals. A genu- ine running race or trotting contest should be exciting enough in itself. But the betting and gambling should be suppressed. Hundreds of clerks in wholesale and retail stores make bets at every race meet simply be- cause betting has become a mania. The temptation should be discour- aged. Money handed over to a winner often should go to pay one‘s honest debts. _â€"â€"â€"_â€"_ VILLAGE COUNCIL- Pursuant to the call of the Reeve, the lonncil met on Friday, Aug. 20th, in the clerk’s office.
