Four weeks ago Miss Mamie Gil- lespie was head of the glove depart- ment in one of Pittsburg’s (Penn.) largest stores, and toâ€"day she is on a little island off the North Caroâ€" lina coast suffering with a malig- nant growth of leprosy caused by wearing an infected human lxair switch. As a result almost every employer of female labor has or- dered that after the ï¬rst of the month, none of the women are. to wear false hair of any sort._ Some three months ago, Miss 'i‘ril- lespie went to the hair department of the store where she was employ- ed, and purchased a handsome blonde switch. After wearing it about two weeks, her body, from the breast up became covered with a malignant growth which frighten- ed the young woman. She went to Dr. L. M. Golden, who became alarmed, and consulted several leading physicians, before he lin- ally announced that the disease was leprosy, and that Miss Gillesme would have to be taken away and isolated, Where she would not con- taminate others. It took several weeks for the l). S ofï¬cials to trace the lock of gol- den hair, but it was discovered ’ro have been imported from an island in the Caribean sea, where the Cu- ban Government sends its worst cases of leprosy. The hair had been sold in one of Pittsburg’s most prominent stores, and this news caused a sensation, but the young woman had to go. Dr. Golden had warned all of his patients to stop wearing false hair, as this may be only the ï¬rst case of the kind. The girl’s horror was pitiable‘ and she stoutly refused to be tak~ en away, until the government had ingestigated the matter. He caught a. little coldâ€"- ' That was all. Holland is one European coun- try that looks like her pictures. There is no better use for the word quaint than to apply it to Hollond. The farmers really wear wooden shoes. The land really is diked. Black and white Holstein cattle really pervade the landscape. The men really wear blue jean shirts outside their trousers as they work in the fields. On- hundreds of heads of women in any crowd the silver hair baskets, covered 3with lace net, really may be seen. The girl’s and women are really red~ cheeked, Without artiï¬cial colorâ€" ing. The ï¬elds really abound with wild flowers and windmills really sway their gaunt, awkward arms in the wind. There is no sham, no pomp and splendor, no fuss and feather in the country. One gets the impression of a rugged, sham- hating, simple, kind~hearted, hope- ful race in going through Holland. ‘ The woman who has healthy Kid- neys will never know the pain and weakness that make life hardly worth living.
