In the World of Friday. in the York County section, it is pointed out that; owing to the many cases of ty- phoid thp citizens of Eglinton and vicinity are enthusiastic in their ef- forts to get pure drinking water from the artesian wells near Lemonville. A paragraph reads as foiiows :â€" . The introduction by Dr. Godfrey, M.L.A., West York, of a bill in the Legislature empowering the Artesian Water Company to lay pipes to Whit- churchlis meeting with general favor in town in View of the failure of the experts to locate water locally. It is the intention of the company to sup- ply towns in the southern part of the county, and North Toronto is taken to rank in with the rest. “We pro- pose to take only the water which is now running absolutely to waste,†said Dr. Godfrey to The World to. night, “and which will in no sense detract from the supply now available for general use. In short, it will supply all the southern part with ab- solutelylpure water, and the farmers of Whitehuroh will lose none of their present available supply. The Mail and Empire and the Toronto World do not express the same views on the result of the Fosterâ€" Maedouald libel suit. The Mail says, “the verdict is a vindication of Mr. Foster . . . . Mr. Foster is to be congratulated upon the fact that a jury of his countrymen has branded as untrue the stories his traducer has so dilligently circulated against him.†The World concludes a criticism of the case|in the following paragraph:â€" “Hon. Mr. Foster may have his own views of his conduct. The Mail and Empire is convinced that he did nothing wrong and that a jury of his fellow countrymen vindicated his character, the Conservative party may think the verdict is of no con- cern to itâ€"but the public will say that the right View of the administra- tionof trust funds was upheld by the verdict of the jury. And that is the main concern of the public at large.†"We ï¬nd that while Mr. Foster acted in guod faith while acting in the capacity of manager of the Union Trust 00., his actions are open to criticism, and that he is not entitled to recover damages from Mr. Mac- donald." The costs of the suit, about $10,000, will be paid by Mr. Foster. "We,"the jury, do agree in view of the evidence presented to us, that Mr. Maedonald was justiï¬ed in making the statements published by him in The Globe of Oct. 21, 1908. Itwes generally thought that the jury would disagree, that some of them would be for conviction and some for acquittal. Such was not the case, however. Each and everyone of the jurymen voted Mr. Macdonald wasjustlï¬ed in making the statements complained of. The verdict reads as follows :â€" The speech was printed in the Globe, and Mr. Foster at once issued a writ; for $50,000 against Mr. Mac- Donald for slander and libel. The trial lasted nine days, during which time the court room where the case was tried was crowded to the doors. A. Macdonald, editor of the Toronto Globe. .- The suit arose out of a spéech delivered by the defendant at Orillia, on the 20th of October, 1908, in which it was charged that “Mr. Foster asked for a private rake-off in a deal with trust funds, that he directed the suspicious way in which that personal takeoff should be paid, and that he had no right or title to that money.†It is a long time since a trial for aileged slanderand libel has attfact- ed so much amention as that of the Hon. Gieorge E. Foster against; Mr. J. RlOKMOND HILL, 0m. MARCH 3.11910 MR. MACDONALD J USTIFIED. his ï¬ihemi. TUESDAY, MatrJG-Farm stock, imple- ments etc., on lot 9.
