The Fifth Ward Toronto Conserva- tive Association did themselves credit Monday evening in refusing the pro- posal to elect candidates for munici- pal ofï¬ces on a party basis. At a previous convention of Conservatives it was proposed to intmduce party politics into the civic menu, but the speakers Monday night endeavored to show that half the Conservatives in the City were against the innova- tion, and it would be a mistake even from a political standpoint. In po- litical matters no scheme has yet been devised better than party gov- ernment, but to elect a mayor, reeve or councillor simply because he be- longs to a certain political party would in some cases be little less than a crime. Correspondence in The Toronto World is an indication that, there is much‘opposition in North Toronto to, the building of a High School in that town. Petitions are in circulation in opposition to the proposed building, and many reasons are given why the Work should be postponed. The article dated North Toronto, Oct. 5, says: “One or two members of the Council have given their approval, but the majority have. always taken the ground that a high school at the present time would 'be premature, and counseled delay." The writer referred to the continuation class now doing work in North Toronto, but says:â€"- “It is held that not alone is“ the whole proceeding so far illegal, but that the ratepayers are, as a body, opposed to the school, on the ground of the largely increased cost; that they have never been consulted in the matter at all; that the action of the department is not obligatory, and th at the petitions now being simulated throughout the town opposing it are meeting with general support. It is held that there are not enough residents in town, and that the added taxes would be fully four mills on the dollar, and probably more, while the aeceésibility of the city high schools and Collegiate institutes, with their superior equipment, would mili- tate greatly against a local institu- tion. Finally it is urged that in the event of annexation, which is con- ceded to be near at hand, if a school is regarded as necessary, a building more in keeping with the beautiful northern, suburb could be built and equipped by the city. In any event, there will be strong Opposition to the proposal.†Elm ï¬iheml.
