The public meeting held in Massey Hall Wednesday evening of last week to protest against Ireland hav- ing self-government Was attended by about 3,000 people. The meeting was enthusiastic, and utterances of the speakers were applauded to the echo. Some of the speakers admit- ted that Home Rule was a good thing for Canada. In fact it was the prop or thing for South Africa and Aus- tralia, but it would not be safe to give Irishmen similar treatment. The Toronto World in reporting the speeches gives the following reas- ons put‘forward by Rev. Dr. Hincks, for voting against self~government in Ireland:â€"- “Because our empire is a unit, and the sorrows or dangers of any part of it are the concern of all. A proposition is being made at the centre to break up the United King- dom. Because the proposition arises from the ultramontane Nationalists of Ire- land. Because I believe the ultramon- tane Nationalists of Quebec and of Ireland to be equally dangerous to the empire. Beoauge home rule is largely the latest child of a Romish mother. Because of Ireland's unexampled prosperity as a member of the fam- ily of the British Empire. Because there is a limit to the. ex- tension of parliamentary autonomy. Because there are two Irelands and both must be justly dealt with. BeCause the proposal is the most superb instance of financial cheek in all the history of the British Empire." Another paper reports Dr. A. W. Thornton as saying in his address: “We are here to-night because a part of the Empire is threatened with a great wrong, and we are bent to protest against that wrong. We are here to say that if Ulster lights. 7 we, the people of Toronto, or part of- them at all events, are ready to stand behind them with our moral and ma‘ terial support as far as lies in our power. If we did less than that we would be worthy the name of Can- adians." Ireland will not make her own 10- cal laws unless the majority of the British House of Commons say so. If they do it is surely not wise to en- courage the Ulster men to take up arms. It will be timeenough to fight after the Irishmen have failed to make good their promises. vaughan Council The next meeting of the Council of the Huni~ oipnlitv of Vaughan will be held in the Town Hall.
