The article is en- titled "Canada’s Coastguards and- Privateers." and is written by Charles S. Blue. In view of the magnitude of the arms and vessels used in the present war the "stout craft" and gallant. seamen of a. ,century ago form an interesting comparison. V’oters’ List 1914: It is the general opinion that there was never any real intention of pro- testing Mr. Rowell’s election. The local men in Woodstock disclaim re- sponsibility. The Mail & Empire said in their news account that the petition had been filed upon- instruc tions from Toronto Solicitors. The Government, or .liquor interests, or perhaps, both, evidently thought they might annoy Mr. Rowell by making this attack .ind then with- drawing it. They also thought that they might make a little cheap po- litical capital out of the incident.1 Their plan has failed, however, and I the unfairness of the move has arous- ed the resentment of fair minded Conservatives as well as of Liberals themselves. MUNICIPALITY OF THE T0\VNSHIP OF as required and the proceedings, therefore, were declared void. The protests which will definitely go on are those by the Conservatives against Mac. Lang in Cochrane and by the Liberals against Dr. Martyn in East Lambton. Mr. Rowell’s election in North Oxford has not been protested. His opponents filed a petition but did not deposit $1000 within four days The great battle commenced several days ago between the allied forces and the Germans still rages with undiminished fury, and the loss is heavy on both sides. Sunday's battle was hard on the allies who were forced to retire to other posi- tions, but they retired in order. and have absolute confidence in victory. The Russian soldiers are advancing into Prussia with good success. Canadians are hastening to the front, and it is confidently expected the Germans and Austrians will suffer reverses in the near future. RICHMOND HILL. 0NT..
