The imports of manufactured cotton into Canada have been running at about (30 per cent. of the production in Canada, or 37 per cent. of the con. sumption in this country. While the largest importations have come from the United Kingdom there have been substantial imports from Ger- many, France, andSwitzerland also. The shutting off of imports from Germany and the curtailment of im- ports from France and Switzerland means that much of the cotton that has been imported into Canada from these countries will now hate to be made in this country. The Canadian cotton mills are also being called upon to supply a portion of the trade that formerly went to the United Kingdom. This is due to the in- creased eost of cotton imported from the United Kingdom owing to in- creased freight rates, exehange, and in- surance, and to uncertainty on the part of many dealers regarding delay or loss in shipment . The promoters of the new clmrnl sneietv must feel very pleased with the enthusiastic responsp: which has been made to the suggestion of {mining such a, club in this vicinity. Thé meet- ing on Tuesday evening was a great success. plans were fornmhtcd for the organization cf a chorus of 100 nr more voices and the nature of the aim and scope of the‘ society decided upon.
