Surnames and» Their (irigin CHESMAN. Variationâ€"Chessman. Racial Originâ€"English. Sourceâ€"An occupation. This is another family name of Eng- lish origin, which is traceable to the occupation of the persons who ï¬rst started its use in the hereditary sense. You might suspect from its obvious formation that it has some reference to the ancient game of chess. but this is not so. The doubling of the "s" in one form of the name is but a modern development. If you remember that the "ee" so often occurring in modern English is a strictly modern development of spelling, and that in nearly every case it was originally an “e,†and that the “co†was only rarely met with back in the days when family names were being formed, you get your clue to the origin got the name. The word “cheese,†for instance, was spelled “chese†or “ches†in some cases, for there was no universal standard of spelling in those days such as has developed since the growth of the printing industry and the publication Of grammars and dic- tionaries. This would give ground for the theory that the name originally meant “cheeseman.†Actual historical record of the period when the name was used in the descriptive sense ab- solutely substantiates this. The original Chesmans wereAdealers in, or makers of cheese, and knowing what we do of the industrial and com- mercial system of medieval England, the assumption that they were in the most cases both is reasonable. CALHOUN. Variationsâ€"Colquhoun. \Racial Originâ€"Scottish. Sourceâ€"A locality. . This family name. Calhoun being a modern variation of the true form of Colquhoun, comes from the name of one of the clans of the Scottish High- landers, who derived it from the name of the locality in which they establish- ed themselves, the Barony in West Kilpatrick (or Kirkpatrick), in Dum- bartonshire. Beyond this, the mists of the past cloud the search, for the origin of the place name. By some the name of Colquhoun is supposed to be derived from the given name of “Conachin.†By others it is explained as ‘Colgch- uoin.†a personal name, meaning “war- dog,†and virtually the same as the name of that great Irish warrior of antiquity, “Chuchulin.†The spelling does not look alike but remember that the gutterais of the Gaelic are rather diflicult to indicate, and that the Gae- lic speech itself has undergone changes from its ancient form, just as English, French and German have done. The Clan Colquhoun, however, dates only from about the year 1240 or so. ,It was organized and founded by one Humphrey de Kilpatrick, who, though 1Knot himself a Gael, had received a grant of land in that section from the ’Earl of Lennox in the reign of King .Alexander II. of Scotland. â€"-â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"_ Why should you follow a crooked path .9 Often a cowpath has been allowed to become a village street, and as the village expanded, sion of a cow’s will. tradition has made the winding way an expres- Habit is always forging chains to enslave us, so that what has been found bearable by the fathers is accepted by the sons. When older, however, we craved a hot drink with meals, and custom gave US 0111' tea or coffee. Finally upon the instructions of the doctor, Mother gave up hertea and cofl'ee. But that meant nothing in our young lives. Our vitality ‘ was then strong enough to throw off any ill effects. But our time came, and we learned by ex- perience that we could not drink tea or coffee. When we had it for breakfast it put our nerves on edge. When we drank it at the evening meal, we tossed about in wakefulness most of the night. And then we found Postum, a pure cereal beverage, free from the harmful drug, caffeine, in tea and coffee. We liked the rich, satisfying flavor of Postum~and also the better health which re- sulted. And, too, we were surprised to find how many of our neighbors had made the same dis- coveryâ€"had learned the value of “health ï¬rst." Even nowadays they are in common use for this purpose in hotels and restaurants. A new twist is given to the idea by William A. Corbett. of Winnipeg. He makes the eggs time themselves, and, }when they are cooked, lift themselves out of the boiling waterâ€"with the help of a modiï¬cation of idea. The device for the purpose is a tube containing a number of lead balls. It is attached by a little bracket to the edge of a saucepan, and from the end of it is suspended a wire basket to hold the eggs in the boiling water. A branch of the tube contains a sandglass, in such a position that the upper bulb of the latter keeps the lead balls in place. But this upper bulb is made of rubber and, when the sand has run out of it, it collapses, allowmg the balls to run down into the hollow handle of the tube. The transfer of their weight to the handle causes the end of the tube to rise and lift the egg- coniaining basket out of the water. v MONEY ORDERS. A Cheap Method of.Housing Swine. Shade in summer and shelter in winter are two essentials to success- ful swine rearing. As the Dominion Animal Husbandman says in a lately issue-d circular from Ottawa, two or three cheap, portable cabins and a boxstal‘l for the farrowing sow will supply the necessary housing in the case of the farmer who maintains a few hogs. Specialized hog raising necessarily calls for more equipment. The right kind of a cabin should be relatively light and built on runners so that it may be moved to fresh ground occasionally. In order to be durable and strong, it should be conâ€" structed of sound but rough material.
