"The O'Dowds were one of the num- erous clans which were in the first place septs o-r divisions of the still more ancient clan of the O'Connors, which together with the O'Neills fur- nished a very large number of the suc- cession of “High-Kings” who ruled the ancient Irish civilization from about 1700 13.0. until it finally went to pieces under the terrific and persistent on- slaughts of the Anglo-Normans. The family name of O’Dowd and its variations are but Anglicized develop- ments of the Irish clan name of "O’Dudhda.," and such names as Heth- ei‘lngton, De ’eauharnais or Van Bens- selaer “have nothing on it" from the viewpoint either of antiquity or im- portance in the dim ages of the past. At best the use of these others as hereditary family names can go back to but about the eleventh century. Five hundred years before this the Chieftain of the Clan O’Dowd stood high in the councils of the Irish kings and high-kings. It was about the year 650 A.D. that the organization of the clan took place under the leadership of the Chieftain “Dubhda,” whose given name had a meaning not dissimilar to “Donald.” T-hat ls, it meant “dark oomplexioned.” High Prices for Stock. The auction sale of animals that have passed the Culling Committee has always been a feature of the Toronto Fat Stock Show. and the prices paid by the various local and out-of-mwn packers and butchers have always well repaid exhibitors for the extra labor and feed necessary to pro- duce show stock. It is anticipated that there will be a large number or buyers on hand this year and prices obtained be more than satisfactory to the large number of exhibitors who feed animals of the highest quality for show and sale. It is Teutonic, but not of the preâ€"Christian era, for its mean- ing is “lamb-bright” or" “fair lamb," clearly not the type of name to be chosen by the war-loving pagan Teu- tons. But for by far the most part the family names in this group were form-’ ed with no idea of any zoological con- nection, but were based in regular fashion upon a given name, and in the first cases were significant of parent- age. Lambert was this name. It was the name-borne by the patron salmt of Liege, and was brought into England from Flanders, for all through the Middle Ages trade and communication between these countries was close. How did such a family name as Lamb come into being? Through the resemblance of a. man to a sheep? Possibly, in some in- stances. Through the Inn or shop Sign, as “At the Sign of the Lamb?” Yes, in a great number of Instances. Yet since the first man travelled, Success wasâ€"near, somewhere. Canada is now the second wheat producing country in the world, ac- cording to 1921 statistics. We produce about halt as much wheat as the United States. but they, it must be remembered, have ten inhabitants to our one. Russia, at one time an im- portant factor in this fundamental in- dustry, has apparently fallen by the wayside, for she does not appear in the 1921 list. The C.N.R. has carried this seasonâ€"September lst to Novem- ber Nthâ€"41,320 cars, or approximate- ly nine and three quarter million bush- els. It was simply a matter of being ‘ jump ahead of everybody else, : Carnegie was able to accomplish I through his wisdom in hiring chemist. The process in question overcame the difficulty. Carnegie, through his chemist, got news of it, and he lost no time in securing exclusive rights to its use in the United States. At that time deposits of the Lake Superior region had not been discov- ered and the States was getting most of its iron ores from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Carnegie saw that the new process would make available the iron beds of the Appalachians, where the ores are high in phosphorus, and he secured options on all the best or them. Soon afterwards he sold these options at a clear profit of $1,000,000. In Europe there was introduced the so-called "Thomas basic process," which made possible the use of high- phos'phorus iron. Previously Iron that contained much phosphorus was not available for making steel because the product was brittle. He was the first ironmaster to hire a. chemist. We all know how much chemistry has {had to do with the de- velopment of steels, but at that period, when the s-hrewd Scotchman was young, possibilities in that direction had not begun to be realized. Here is a story that has never been told In print. It tells how Andrew Car- negie made his first million dollars. Minard’s Liniment Co.. Ltd.. Canada’s flour is the standard of the world._ This is pretty generally ad- mitted. The writer knows one citizen of the United States who, on every visit he makes to Canada, carries home, under. strict Instructions from his Wife, a number of loaves of bread, she claiming that no bread obtainable in the United States can approach that made from Canadian flour. As an instance of the increasing popu- larity of Canadian flour, it is interest- ing to note that Dr. A. H. Stafford, born in Winnipeg but for some time past domiciled in Jamaica, recently said that until the steamships “Canadian Forester” and “Canadian Fisher,” of the Canadian Government Merchant Marine Service, came into Kingston last spring, every pound of flour used on the island came from the United States. Now it all comes from Canada. This very valuable market for Cana- dian products has been captured by three ways, Dr. Stafford affirms: First, the fact that Canada had ships to de- liver it there; second, the quality of the flour itself; and third, the fact that the people of Jamaica desire closer commercial and social relations with the people of Canada.
