THE LIBERAL Circulating in Canada's Greatest Suburban District Pl'BLISIlEI) EVERY 'l‘lIL'RSI)AY by the LIBERAL PRINTING CO. Limited J. EACIIERN SMITH Manager and Editor Advertising Rates on Application THURSDAY, MAY 27th. 1020 WHY ALL THE HASTE? Every man who travels the highâ€" way is not on an emergency trip. A few minutes would not make any difference in the most of cases, as far :is business is concerned, but it cer- tainly would make a lot of difference as far as safety is concerned. For instance, the man or woman who starts out on a pleasure jaunt seld- om has a set schedule for arriving at any place. Usually they have all day, or all afternoon, or all evening at their disposal, and speed is by no means essential to their pleasure or safety. An exchange suggests that the promoters of safety erect a few signs reading: “Why All the Hurry?†“Pause, Ponder and Pull Up"; “More Hurry, Less Speedâ€; “Why Take a Chance?â€; “Lose Five Minutes and Save Five or More Yearsâ€; “Watch Your Step by Taking Your Feet off the Gas,†and a few other similar- ly appropriate bits of advice to the speed demons. There may be a lot of poor driv- ers in the country, defective auto- mobiles, and bad roads, but the maj- ority of automobile accidents are caused through nothing but a craze for speedâ€"unnecessary speed. When people begin to realize that need for hurrying exists only in their own minds, there will be a very welcome reduction in the number of motor ac- cidents. We respect an alarm clockâ€"but it has few real friends. It is a shining .example of the type of reminder that (compels rather than persuades. People do not like to be influenced by alarm clock methods. They prefer the advice of friends. ‘It is that element of personal friendliness that distinguishes the newspaper from, other forms of ad- vertising. It is a welcome, sought after visitor in the home and is read by every member of the family. Its advertising is presented as friend in- troduces a stranger. Let us intro- duce you :to our ever growing family vertising columns. ‘G‘w From the. issue, Thursday, May 30, The hand of the Governor General. 1 l l of readers through the Liberal adâ€" /Ontar° has held its Prm'indal Con' 7 Bac a 12101 Richmond Hill Fair was held on Monday, May 24, but the attendance was disappointing as it rained dur- i,,,[, p,†in}: the day and the grounds \'»"‘I‘L very wet and muddy. lru not standing the rain thva \‘.:~' :1 entry of horscs. cuill's. poultry other exhibits. The weather was idcal and there was a good crowd in attendance. In addition to the showing of live stock three teams took part in a foot ball tournanwn‘ m)» in which Aurora won the prize of 55.0.. ReturnedMen Of This District To Hold Meeting As members of the C.E.F. began to return to Canada in numbers during the later war years they found themâ€" selves upon discharge faced with the problem of re-establishmcnt in civil life. This led to the forming of ex- soldier organizations. Following the general demobilization, however, it was found there were large bodies of ex-soldiers with their own peculiar problems, and as a consequence num- erous organizations were formed, each representing their factions, such as the Amputation, the Tuberculous, the the Pensioners, etc. During the last few years it has become glarineg evident that a great deal of overlapping has been obtain- ing in the'handling of ex-soldiers’ af- fairs, and it was felt if one organiza- tion could speak as representing all ex-soldiers this would be much more desirable. The occasisn of Field Marshall Earl Haig’s visit to this Dominion was seized upon by that outstanding sold- ier during his coast to coast tour.by an appeal to all ex-soldiers and exxst- ing exâ€"soldier organizations to merge into one organization. Conferences of delegates, representingall classes of exâ€"soldiers, and all existing organi- zations, were held in Ottawa and in Winnipeg in July and November res- pectively last year, and as a.result it was decided to brirg into being‘an organization known as the Canadian Legion, which organization it 1s. inâ€" tended shall represent all (ex-soldiers. Anniversary At St. John’s Church The anniversary services under the auspices of the Ladies’ Aid of St. John’s United Church were held on Sunday last and were largely attendâ€" ed. The morning service was in char- ge of Rev. 1. G. Bowles of Yonge treet United Church and in the even- ing Rev. W. E. Wilson of King Street United Church occupied the pulpit. Eloquent and inspiring sermons were given by both these outstanding mini- sters of the church. Special music was a feature of the services and added much to the suc- cess of the day. At the morning ser- vice the ehoir under Adelmo Melecci rendered an anthem and a pleasing solo was given by Mr. Lauder Glass. In the evening there were two ant- hems by the choir. OAK RIDGES ST.
