Londonâ€"A notable anniversary in the history of the Hudsons Bay Com- pany was celebrated on. Thursday in a practical way. On June 3rd, 1668, a little vessel, “Nonsuch,†set sail from Gravesend for Canada with 50 tons of cargo on a voyage which, as pointed out by the governor of the company, Chas. V. Sale, not only marked the inception of the Hudsons Bay Com- pany, but also laid the foundation of‘ the great Dominion of Cafnada, the keystone of the Empire, stretching from sea to sea. On Thursday, on the 258th anniver- sary, a new steamer, the “Bay Rup- ert,†with a carrying capacity of 3,690 tons, left Gravesend on her maiden voyage to Canada. The Bay Rupert will be the biggest ship in the Arctic trade with a speed of 141/2 knots. It is ï¬tted with every conceivable device for safe navigation, is provided with special dust-proof and rat-proof fur rooms, and has sep- arate quarters for Eskimos. She is also a semi-icebreaker. DEAF LEARN TO HEAR BY SENSE OF TOUCH Sensation Produced Through Tips of Fingers and Then Reproduced. Montreal.+â€"Taking the principle that there is some relation between the sense of touch and hearing, Dr. Max A. Goldstein, Director of the Central Institute for the Deaf, St. Louis, Mo., demonstrated before the meeting of the American Laryngological, Rhino- logical and chol-og'ical Convention here how the sense of touch, which is applied to the blind in the interpre- tation of Braille, may be applied to the deaf. Taking for the demonstration a con- genitally deaf child, a girl of about 10 years of age, who cannot hear the human voice under any circumstances, Dr. Goldsbein used a megaphone, stretching an ordinary wet paper over it to make a diaphragm, in which sounds were uttered. By her sense of touch the child analyzed the sounds produced by the human voice through her ï¬nger tips. and then reproduced Five Persons Lose Their Lives in Tragedies at Sherbrook: hem ï¬nge ,ph me sound rapidly as the normal person re- ; the sound through his ears, the received the sensation through ingers. “She felt what a phono- 1 needle feels, and interpreted it ‘stem is still m a. Dr. Goldsteir it \ stated. 1 in the experimen‘ ,e Kay ated Boyce said, the placing of the tablet on Canadian soil by American hands was a fact enough in itself to symbol- ize the amity and the brotherZ-iness which exist between the people of Can, adra and of the United States. What- ever of rancor there might have been when those who slept there lay them- selves down with a will, it had vanish- ed with the passing years, and peace had come to those brave British and American soldiers who fell, and who long had slept side by side in the hallowed ground near where those who gathered to pay tribute stood. The peace of Canada. and the Un- ited Stat-es was a. peace of good-will and understanding. As long as san- ity was vouchsafed to mankind, no- thing would mar this glorious peace, which was an example for the world to follow, Mr. Boyce said. with useless freight at the town dock.
