Reports from various centres in various parts where a system similar to the local one is used indicate that there is always trouble in the summer months. Even the great system which supplies nine hundred million gallons per day to the city of New York gave considerable trouble last year. similar to ours. They experienced the same difficulty with Weeds and after Spending large sums of money endeavouring to clean the bed of the pond by pulling them found that the effort was useless as the weeds grew in the next year thicker than ever. They finally overcame the difficulty by erecting a huge concrete basin which was easily cleaned from time to time if necessary. The opinion has been expressed that similar action ‘will be the ultimate solution of the local problem and it has also been suggested that the reservoir should be covered which has proven satis- factory in some places. The pro- posal to move the intake has been laid aside as tests have proven that the water in the creek shows a var- ied contamination at different periods which would mean the necessity of treating with chlorine for the max- imum contamination with a resultant chlorine taste in the water. that it is “rotten.” Investigation however, will show that ever since the installation of the system in 1922, a persistent effort has been made to combat conditions which are shared by other municipalities all over the country who are similarly situated as to water supply. Citizens will recall that shortly ‘after the installation of the system the water became very foul smelling owing to weed growth that had settled in the bottom of the pond and ever since that time at various intervals the weeds have been a constant source of annoyance.
