Mackenzie King Present Prime Minister of Canada. The Dominion of Canada as it came into being on July lst, 1867 was the outcome of an endeavor by men of diverse temperaments, racial origins, religious and political faiths, to serve the ideal of nationhood. The Union of Upper and Lower Canada with Nova Sco- tia and New Brunswick, which formed the Canada of the Fathers of Confederation, was but the ï¬rst-fruits of this endeavor. As: one by one other provinces became part of the Dominionâ€"Manitoba in 1870, British Columbia in 1871 and Prince Eda d Island in 1873â€"the same spirit of unity, the same ideal of nationTi-Iood were manifest, until in 1905 Saskatchewan and Alberta newly created out of the territories of the middle West, brought to completion the federation of provinces from sea to sea. The vast territories and the silent spaces that sweep northward into the unknown speak more eloquently than words of boundaries still undeï¬ned in a land that is limitless in its possibilities of further development and growth. 1 Such is the Canada we now know, just sixty years from the day of its birth! The Diamond Jubilee of Confederation is the occasion of national rejoicing at the peace and plenty, the progress and pros- perity, that a United Canada toâ€"day enjoys; it is the occasion, too, of national thanksgiving for the spirit of unity bequeathed to us by the Fathers of Confederation. This spirit of unity, the secret of expan- sion in our national life, it is our highest duty as well as privilege ever fervently to maintain.
