The deer were grazing with cattle and showed no restlessness until investig- ators came within a short distance of them, when they moved off leisurely. Wild deer are not often seen in this district. It is good advice for pedestrians walking in the North Yonge Street district to “face the traffic.” With heavy fog it is often impossible for a motorist to observe a pedestrian in front of him when brilliant oncoming ‘ lights are in view. A pedestrian may not realize this and may be in real peril. If the walker crosses the road, ) however and faces the traffic he can see i oncoming cars, and in case of danger step out of the way. i I have been a resident of Scarboro for upwards of 69 years and I never saw as \much hay wasted thrugh bad weather, writes the Malvern corres- pondent ‘of the Markham Sun referr- ing to this year’s hay crop. Everything comes to thbse who wait. Remember that when you are discussing the change of gauge of the radials or the paving of Yonge Street. Sixty members of the English Newspaper Society will visit Canada next month with a view to obtaining a wide intimate first-hand knowledge of our Dominion. The party which will include most of the important daily newspapers outside of London, will tour Canada from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The story of Canada will doubtless be told to the readers of those papers in several instalments, and as a result a real and vital inte- rest in this country should be awaken- ed in the minds of hundreds of thous- ands of people. Thornhill is going to have street lights. Why not lights all along Yonge Street from the city limits as far north as Schomberg Junction. A Late Hour Not .long ago a citizen was Wend- ing his way homeward, walking from this side to that, muttering to him- self and wondering what Mary would say about the lateness of the hour, He had reached the square. It was midnight, but the citizen did not know it for as he looked at the clock in the steeple of the Methodist church the dials seemed to revolve like a buzz saw. “I am drunk,” said the citizen, “drunkâ€"too drunk to see straight, but if that clock would strike, I’m not so drunk but what I can count!” He sat down on the steps to think it over. Just then the clock began to strike. The man counted one 2 Carl Deavitt, Locust Hill â€" Daw- son’s Golden Chaff. 3 Milne Bros., Locust Hillâ€"O. A} C No. 104. Lloyd Turner has sold his handsome Clyde mare which he purchased a couple of years ago from Graham Bros., to Thos. Kidd of Victoria Squ- ‘are, Mr. Kidd previously purchased from Mr. Turner :1 very good mate for this animal, ‘so that he now has the team.â€"-S,touffville Tribune. A teacher was instructing her class in the use of antonyms. “Now, childâ€" ren," she said, “what is the opposite of sorrow ?” “Joy,” shrieked the class in unison. “What is the opposite of pleasure?" “Pain.” “And what is the opposite of woe?" “Giddap.” The world should honor the man who makes two blades of grass grow where one grew before. This is what has been accomplished an hundred-fold by Mr. J. B. DeFerarri who owns one of the finest fruit and vegetable gard- ens in this district. ‘It is situated on the third concession of Vaughan just north of the Elgin sideroad and is well worth a tour of inspection. Mr. De- Ferarri some twelve years ago pur- chased the property which was then regarded as unprofitable and unfruit- ful land and by hard work and careful application of the science of garden- ing has transformed the property into a veritable vineyard of plenty. “Not on your life,” replied the dealer. “No charge accounts. You can’t do business with the mail order house that way. Fork over the cash.” The customer handed over the cash. “Now two cents for postage and five cents for the money order.” The customer, inwardly raving, kept to his agreement and paid the seven cents. “Now thirty-five cents expressage.” “Well, I’ll beâ€"” the customer said but paid it, adding: “Now hand me it and I’ll take it home for myself and be rid of this foolery." One" looks over the lost strayed or stolen columns in vain to find any mention of the Richmond Hill Inter- mediate Baseball team. They have vanished and no man seems to know whither. Looks as though the earth has opened and swallowed them up. “All right,” said the customer. “You can send it alOng and charge it to my account." “Hand it to you? Where do you think you are? You’ll have to wait a week." Stouffville baseball team received their first defeat this season ina league game at Aurora last week. ‘The score was 1-4, and the game was keenly contested. Bruce Lehman pitched for Stouffville, and Curly Thompson, did the twirling for the Aurora boys. Tell This One To Your Neighbour Down in a certain town a man went into a hardware store to buy some nails and he asked the price. It was 3.20, the dealer said. “Good ‘gracious,” said the man. “I can get the same thing from a mail order house for $2.82." “That’s a low price,” said the deal- er, “but I’ll sell it on the same terms as the mail order house just the same.” Whereupon he placed the nails be- hind his counter. “That makes $3.- 24,” he said. “It has cost you\4 cents more and taken you a week longer to get it than if you had paid my price in the first place."
