A lsecond pump is only 35 under certain , restrictions. | When the average man goes to the igrocery and buys his lowly “spuds†i he probably does not realize what a i great part that vegetable plays in the lamassing of the annual production of wealth in Canada. One feature that i has brought the Canadian potato into lthe limelight has been the increased ldemand for it in the United States. IUncle Sam is buying Canadian Pota- toes at a rate that has boosted the ex- port of tubers from this country four . hundred per cent. in the last two years. The federal bureau of statis- tics has recently issued some very in- teresting figures in this connection. 1 Eight million bushels of potatoes worâ€" ! th ten millions were shipped into the ï¬nited States in the twelve months nding with March of this year as :eoxnpared with three millions and a half bushels in the same period of 19- .25. Last year the total production of :potatoes in Canada amounted to forty 'eight million hundred Weight valued lat seventyâ€"one millions of dollars. On Tuesday morning, July 26th. a porcupine, that had wandered away from its native haunts, was found in the neighborhood of the electric light office in Barrie. He was coaxed into a box and taken to the swamp east of Bradford St, Barrie, where he was liberated. Sidney Johnson, aged 84 years, and a citizen of Tillsonburg appeared be- fore Magistrate Patterson charged with assaulting his neighbor, R. Corn- ell, by hitting him over the head with a heavy cane. ACCused pleaded guilty and was fined $5 and costs, a total of $9, or 30 days in jail. There are other sorts of advertising. besides newspaper advertising Hiring a band to play every day in every neighborhood of your trade terr- itory interspersed by announcements of what you have to sell is getting publicity, but it icosts something more than space. Having a girl call every household up by telephone every day and announce your bargains to the member of the family who replies is advertising, but it Will leave a sting. Newspaper advertising hits every- body all at once; it does not inflict itâ€" self on their attention when they are not ready to read it; and it costs less, all things considered. The barn on the farm of J. Nor- man Sommerville in Vaughan Town- ship, near Coleraine, was destroyed by fire on Sunday evening, Aug. 7th. The owner and his family were absent at the time, leaving the hired man, Wm. Meek, a recent arrival from Ire- land, at home. When Mr. E. Moody, of Brampton, Mr. Sommerville’s bro- ther-in-law, visited the farm about 5 o’clock, he found smoke issuing from the stable underneath the barn. With the assistance of the hired man he was able to extinguish the blaze which was confined to some straw on the concrete floor of the stable. A- bout 8 o’clock the same evening the the fire again broke out in another part of the building, totally destroying the barn and contents. In the barn were ten bags of alsike seed, four loads of hay, some implements, veh- icles, etc. The stable was equipped with modern conveniences including a water system, steel staunchions and milking machine. While Alex. Leith, of Atherley, was preparing to pitch a load of hay from a wagon to the mow, the barn floor suddenly gave way and precipitated the wagon, team, load and driver to the floor beneath. Strangely, neither Mr. Leith, the horses or the equipment were injured. Laziness is Root of Crime Many will agree with the official police view that it is time we stopped “sentimentalizing†so much about the “unfortunates†who are criminals “because they have diseased minds." The great majority of criminals are criminals, because they are too lazy to work hard for an honest liv- ing. They deliberately embark on a career of crime because it offers an easy road to wealth, and too many of them get off much too easily when ap- prehended and convicted. RICHMOND HILL. ONTARIO. AN INFORMAL POSE Eabar £08m can be reduced with a Fmdsom £331†LITTLE BROS. Rid CARS Of all items entering into the cost of crop production, labor is the one item that can be reduced. And the only effective means of reducing costs to a minimum is the adoption of mechanical power and modern farm machinery. A Fordson farmer has a greater capacity for work. He can accomplish 2 or 3 times as much as he did before and with greater ease and convenience for himself. This saving in labor makes possible larger acreages, sown under ideal conditionsâ€"at just the right time. The Fordson is built and sold to serve mankind. It is signiï¬cant that over 20,000 are now in use on Canadian farms. And, an extra 15 acres of wheat often more than pays for a Fordson.
