Richmond Hill ONTARIO ' Blgin 6309 RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8. 1927 William Meek, charged with setting fire to the barn belonging to J. Nor- man Somerville, of Vaughan, pleaded guilty and upon examination was found to be mentally unfit. Meek guilty and upon examination was found to be mentally unfit. Meek had only recently arrived from the Old Land and will likely be deported. Immediately after the Exhibition closes work will be commenced on widening the gauge of the Yongc St. Radial line from the city limits to Sutton. New rural mail boxes will shortly replace the swinging arm type now in vogue. The increase of traffic on the highways and byways brought to the attention of the postal officials the risk of damage to and by the boxes stickiné out over the road. To elimi- nate this objectionable feature the new boxes are pivoted on the post so that at no time can they extend more than half their own length outside the post. GENERAL NEWS AND VIEWS Parry Sound man, cook at a fishing station, instead of providing a radio for amusement during the winter has tamed a crow and its teaching it to talk. He has also a young crane. The sudden passing of Dr. F. G. Stevenson of Bradford, recently has caused a severe loss to a host of friends in and about Bradford where he ‘had practised for forty years. The Canadian hay crop set a new record this year, if the preliminary ï¬gures just released by the Dominion bureau of statistics survive later cor- rection. It is estimated at 16,648,000 tons, just 300,000 tons above the for- mer record, 16,348,000, made in 1919. Wet weather has generally reduced its value, of course. . The other striking feature of the re- port has already been sufficiently commented upon in the press. It is the forecast of a total wheat crop of over 357,000,000 bushels, which is 40,000,000 above the estimate made at Ithe same time last yearâ€"and last year’s estimate fell 90,000,000 bushels short of the actual threshing returns. ’ During the month of August we [had 268 hours of sunshine, in all 16 ihours above normalâ€"and only one wally cloudy day. The mean tem- perature has been 64.8, or 1.5 below |average. Highest was 85, on the 7th 30f the month, and lowest 48, on the l24th. The rainfall was 1.47 inches, or . 1.71 below average. Fire from an unknown cause des- troyed the barns and stables with all this season’s crop, of Graham Bros, “Cairnbrogie,†a half mile west of Claremont, on Tuesday of last week. Only the assistance of the neighbors and the intelligent work of the Clare- mont fire brigade with their chemical engine saved the fine colonial brick house, and the implement shed. This is the segson for Scotch stor- lies. Did you hear this one: “A 'Scotchman, off on a business trip, lcalled back to his wife and child waving from the window: “Good- -bye, all, and dinna forget to tak’ little Donald’s glasses off when he na look- ing at anything.†“The mile and a quarter of county highway on the 8th con., north of Mt. Joy, which was recently b ilt is al- ready breaking up in places. CRAIG Directo-IrhGenex-al of Surveys for the Canadian Government, who has gone to Vancouver to study the problems of the international boun- daries between Canada. the United States, and Alaska. Mr. E. Moynihan arrived in Sask. on Friday, Sept. lst, at 6.30. He re- ports a good trip and lots of work in that district. Misses Margaret and LEmraine Mc- Caug, attended the Ex. on Friday last. Mr. and Mrs. Watson and son motâ€" ored to Uxbridge with friends over the Week-end. School has started and all the child- ren seem glad to be back to work a_ gain. Miss Muriel, Evelyn and Mrs. Freeâ€" land spent the weekâ€"end in Toronto, attended the Ex. on Labor Day. Mr. and Mrs. John Watson attend- ed the Howsam picnic at Manchester on Monday there being about 55 re- latjyes from Chicago, Toronto, Osha- wa, Uxbridge, Port Perry, Manchest- er and Victoria Square. The barns belonging to “Graham Bros,†Claremont were totally de- stroyed by fire on Tuesday evening of last week, all horses being at the Ex. but one driver, which was saved by neighbours, the community fought ‘hard to save the horse. This is the second time in 8 years that fire has caused loss in the farm. Mr. Bert Bostons report having a lovely trip landing at Boston, Mass, on Wednesday last. The Victoria Square League have withdrawn their annual Picnic.
