SEPTEMBER 22, 1927 All Vehicles Must Carry Lights After October lst Beginning October 1st all vehicles using the highways at night must carry lights and all cars equipped with four-wheel brakes must display in the rear a small triangular brake sign that has been approved by the Department of Highways. There should be no difficulty in en- forcing the latter amendment. But in solving the problem of light on horse drawn vehicles the department may experience 'difficulty. The danger of carrying a lighted lamp on the rear of a load of hay is obvious. Provision was made in the amendment to allow the department to exercise discretion. It may allow the use of reflectors. The amendments reads as follows: “Subject to the provisions of clause every vehicle other than a motor veh- icle or a bicycle or a tricycle when on the highway after dusk and before dawn shall carry in a conspicuous po- sition on the left side thereof a light- ed lamp showing white to the front and red to the rear, any lamp so used shall be visible at a distance of at least 200 feet." GENERAL NEWS AND. VIEWS Penalty for non-compliance for the first offence is not over five dollars for the second not less than five dol- lars nor more than ten dollars, and for each subsequent offence not less than ten dollars and not more than twenty-five. Busy Threshing Local farmess are now through with harvest and many have their fall wheat planted, some fields showing a- bove ground one and two inches of nice green covering. Just now there is nothing in greater demand than the threshing machine, and every outfit in the section is pressed to the limit of its capacity. Grain is turning out fairly well in yield with a big crop to thresh. Potatoes Cheap The potato market at Goodwood is not very brisk. Tubers are realizing only 85¢. per bag, with not a very keen demand. However, it is rather early in the season, and prices are ex_ pected to advance shortly. Turnips are being loaded at 20c. a bushel. Stoufufville Defaulted Stouffville, the league leaders in the York-Simc0e Baseball League de- faulted the remaining series in the schedule to Aurora, and thereby gave up possession of the famous Macken- zie King Cup, emblematic of the leag- ue championship to Aurora’s stal- warts. Kleinburg School has reopened with nineteen on the roll. Not many years ago there were fifty-two on the roll Miss Langford of Alton, is the new teacher. Angle parking of automobiles was inaugurated in Stoufl’ville for the first time on Saturday evening, by order of the council. The instructions issued were for cars to park on the south side of Main street, and the request was well observed. The will of Jonathan Nigh, a form- er warden of York County, who residâ€" ed on the 0th of Markham, was prob- ated on Monday. The will disposes of a hundred acre farm, valued at $10,- 000 and 814,699 personal estate. The farm and stock is left to his son Ed- gar H. Nigh, subject to the payment of $300 a year to Mrs. Maria Nigh, widow of the testator, who is also to have the use of five rooms in the house and be provided with fuel, and to Edith L. Elliott, daughter is be- queathed $1,000. Edgar is also left $775 stock in the Bethesda & Stoufl'- ville Telephone Co., and the residue is left to the widOW in lieu of dower. Mistakes When a plumber makes a mistake, he charges twice for it. When a law- yer makes a mistake, it is just what he wanted, because he had a. chance to try the case all over again. When a. carpenter makes a mistake, it is just what he expected. When a doc- tor makes a mistake, he huries it. When a judge makes a mistake. it be- comes the law of the land. When a preacher makes a mistake, nobody knOWS the difference. But when the editor makes a mistake â€" good night! In just a few weeks now most of us can take the lawn mower home and get it out of the way in the garage. The annual plowing competition for young men in York County under thirty years of age held under the auspices of the local Department of Agriculture, is now under way. Suitable classes have been selected for beginners and experienced plow- men with teams and tractors. Open to Young Men of York County Championship and cash prizes have been donated and a special effort is being made to make the competition a success. Why not take advantage of this opportunity to improve your plowing and to win a valuable prize. Judging does not begin until Nov. 2nd. Further information will be gladly given by the local Dept. of Agricul- ture, Newmarket. PLOWING COMPETITION NOW IN PROGRESS A very pretty wedding took place ' at the Alliance Tabernacle, Christie Street on Wednesday, September 14, when Miss Pearl Dukelaw, second daughter of Peter Dukelaw, of 41 Brock Ave., Toronto, became the bride of Mr. Levi A. Elliott, son of the late Douglas Elliott of Richmond Hill. 1The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Ira E. David, of Toronto. Thei bride was assisted by her sister, Miss ’ Pearl Dukelaw, and Mr. Fred Handy, of Toronto acted as best man. After the ceremony the happy couple left on a honeymoon trip for New York and other American points. On their re- turn they will reside at 149 Browning Ave, Toronto. DR. R. M.
